Suggest adding "brutally subverted" - it may not quite be natter, but it's certainly an extremely annoying piece of Word Cruft. We even had a thread on the topic. In fact, all of the "adjectively subverted" phrases mentioned in that thread are common types of Word Cruft, so you might consider adding them all. Quite a few cases are Not A Subversion as well.

I think you want "to be fair" rather than "tough to be fair".
The actual search is "though to be fair", it's the link that's typo'd.
BTW, I'm a chick.Aha. Well spotted. The shorter string will catch more vile variations though:
- "Although, to be fair natter natter natter"
- "To be fair natter natter natter"
- "Though if we want to be fair natter natter ennatternatter"
- "If we are to be fair natter"
- "To be fair to Ranma natter natter"
- Etc.

Thanks guys I already added them.
Make your hearth shine through the darkest night; let it transform hate into kindness, evil into justice, and loneliness into love.Coolness. Now, should we also purge links to ED?

"played painfully straight" is another phrase that deserves axing. If something is played straight, noting it doesn't make much sense.
And delete Encyclopedia Dramatica links. It's a site that features porn, violent imagery, and swears and slurs on every page. We really shouldn't be linking to it. Encyclopedia Dramatica has its own niche, but we want to stay as far away from that niche as possible for this wiki. We don't need random tropers stumbling on a page that gouges their eyes out like Troper Tales.

Fight. Struggle. Endure. Suffer. LIVE.add "and how!", one of the most annoying words on the wiki, since So Yeah.
Keeper of The Celestial Flame
"Played straight" would really only be useful on pages that only mark subversions. If I recall correctly though, those pages only allow subversions and aversions.
Read all of my fanfics!I can see using "played straight" when you're listing multiple examples from the same work, most of which are played with somehow. But mostly it's wordcruft.
132 is the rudest number. Also, when listing a trope that is normally played with, on a work page, like The Butler Did It
Ohh, I got one...
Facepalm itself is probably used here more for bashing than describing the trope. Along with Flat "What", it's a good word to search for in a page you're gonna edit.
Put me in motion, drink the potion, use the lotion, drain the ocean, cause commotion, fake devotion, entertain a notion, be Nova ScotianA collection of these phrases deserve a "Phrases To Avoid" article or a section.
Word Cruft is the place you are thinking of.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"We now have "mildly subverted" to add to the list of terms, since I've just read that on a list of edit reasons as to why something was deleted.
Keeper of The Celestial FlameWill update the new suggestions later guys. Don't worry I am not dead lol
Make your hearth shine through the darkest night; let it transform hate into kindness, evil into justice, and loneliness into love."Subverted in that..." is a really common phrase in Not A Subversion examples.

So is Brutally Subverted a definite no-no? Because I just found it in a list of ways to play with a trope Audience Surrogate.
I checked it, and that's pretty terrible. "Brutally subverted" is bad enough when used on work/trope pages; it shouldn't be on the Playing With wiki at all. Anyone mind if I cut that bit?

Go for it. The only reason I didn't do it is because it looked kind of "official" and I didn't want to screw anything up.
Edit: On a related note, the word "brutally" no longer sounds like a real word to me. I've also lost some faith in humanity and I've only been through about 20 pages.

In defence of that word, I would use it when the situation in itself is brutal, literally. However, I'd be more likely to put it somewhere else.

The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything.I'm only removing it when it is used to describe subversion, aversion, etc.
This is a really good idea but Google seems to be hating my butt in this. First, when I clicked on a link you provided it couldn't scroll further than the first few results, even if I turned off all script/content blocking plugins in my browser. No problem, I just put site:tvtropes.org in a regular Google search and got the same results.
Next, you should to put the search term in quotation marks, otherwise Google will just find any page that has similar words in it, preferably in the title. It also ignores very common words. For example, if I searched for to be fair (without quotation marks), I just got as a result all pages that are relevant to the word "fair" and didn't get close to any problematic cases. After I tried "to be fair" (now with quotation marks) it produced better results. So I suggest modifying the links on the OP so that the searches are quoted.

The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.
I found a way to fight more effectively against most plagues that this wiki suffers. Thanks to the "google site search" we can search for key words (phrases) that are commonly used when tropers use misuses or break the rules and delete/fix more easily misuses.Feel free to suggest more. Have fun! (certainly I had a lot)
