With Detective Pikachu, yes they made the Pokemon more realistic. But you can still say "Yep that's a Pikachu. That's a Charizard" etc
With Sonic, he looks like some guy who obtained the head of a Sonic costume
Please tell me it's not too late for them to pull the plug on this movie. Sonic is already a complete joke in gaming circles, this is only going to spread that all over the internet to irreversable levels

Ditto. Besides, we know how most video game movies turn out...and while I'm still hoping for Detective Pikachu to be the exception, I can't say the same thing about this (or on an unrelated note, that Monster Hunter movie coming up).

Besides, this franchise went through next gen and rise of lyric and is still relatively fine anyways besides just insults throw in its way (which at this point everyone is used to) heck people don't even care about rise of lyric anymore
So this is how I predict this is gonna go down:people hate this movie while also making memes of jim "eggman" carrey, get insults throw at it, see the next big thing and just hate/enjoy that
Simple as that, I could be wrong but this is how it always went, most of the time anyways

Eh, the detective pikachu one at least doesn't irks me just by seeing images of it and the trailer actually kinda interested me. that's a lot more going for it than that, and it's only sonic's design. there's plenty more to fuck up on the road.

How many failed live-action adaptations will it take for Hollywood to realize that some franchises just don't work in live-action? Especially CGI-heavy ones like this one that would be cheaper to make (and would have less Uncanny Valley) as animated films.

You guys are really underestimating how much people love to make a huge thing out of anything bad that comes out of the Sonic franchise.
Hell, Rise of Lyric was just your average bad licensed game, but everyone and their mother acted like it was the next E.T.
These wouldn't continue to exist if these adaptations didn't make money, so saying something failed is relative.

I don't get how Sega works. This seems too derivative for them to greenlight. They won't let Archie's artists show Sonic crying too much, yet they allow the big-budget international film to completely redesign Sonic into that? Nintendo being so strict with their adaptations seems like a good thing, honestly. At least it ensures the Mario film won't be too off.
Sonic in live-action doesn't inherently have to be bad. We do have plenty of games featuring Sonic in realistic areas, after all. Just take Unleashed or Adventure 2, make all the humans live-action, and keep Sonic's animal friends CGI. That's perfectly doable.
The problem is, that's not how live-action films work 9/10 times. I don't know why they keep on doing this - I guess they sell, bad reputation or not - but they always screw up everything. I like the first Scooby Doo, Garfield, and Alvin and the Chipmunks movies but even then I can understand why people hate them.
Character designs almost always take a hit for this or that reason. Sonic honestly looks worse then I imagined. I was picturing some cartoony 1' tall, spiky blue hedgehog thing like you see in a lot of "realistic Sonic" art, not a Petting Zoo Person. Even looking at his silhouette he looks ugly and too muscular. That's not even marketable. Kids don't want plush toys of that.
Hopefully, the full design looks better.

Hopefully there's time to delay the movie another year to just make Sonic less grotesque. Heck, the article made it sound like SEGA was all, "Ehhh, we're not sure if we're okay with this..."
I'll take any story they pull out their butts, just make Sonic look less horrifying! Blur Studio animated cutscenes for some of the games, so don't say "it can't be done."
