Well considering that was the age of Eggman betrayal...it's basically the same thing.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.Bring back Neo Metal Sonic. Such an underutilized design and a cool take on the character.
I think Metal Sonic is one of those villains that is best used once to avoid Villain Decay. Like Doomsday or Bane.
Come to think of it, Sonic Team did cool it on villainous Eggman for a while after Adventure 2. He’s arguably a good guy (if only because he’s forced to be) in Heroes, and Shadow has him in a full game Enemy Mine situation. He didn’t go back to being the big bad who gets usurped in the 11th hour until 06.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.I know it's a blasphemous thought, but I'd rather Robotnik just make a full heel face turn.
Stupid autocorrect.

He'd make a fool of himself alright.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.I liked how Adventures 2 gave depth to why Eggman does what he does. The other games haven't followed upon at that.
On parents, I always assumed Sonic just ran away from home because he's a free spirit like that. He has parents somewhere but prefers being on his own.
Tails is probably an orphan, Knuckles is canonically an orphan, Amy... I like to think her parents are just off-screen but it does seem like she lives alone, so they're probably out of town. Everyone else falls into pure "I don't really care and have never thought about their parents" territory. They're either Conveniently an Orphan or they have Invisible Parents.

I feel like amy's parents are wealthy or something. In Adventure she talks about shopping till she drops and I doubt she works so where does she get all that money?
I think we should learn more about the Robotnik family.
Mileena MadnessOh my god they're teenagers! I can't believe I forgot that! it's just that thing you forget about because it rarely comes up, like how the principal in hero academia is a talking animal

Frankly, the whole 'GUN killed my grandfather and aunt, probably put my family into hiding and destroyed their good name' was a great implicit motivator for Eggman... Just wish it wasn't freaking ignored by all the other games. Because I get that Eggman can't be too sympathetic, and that the story can't be too deep, but it would give his character some depth to have gone off the deep end in an attempt to emulate his genius grandfather's work for world peace. Because when everything's mindless robots, no one will fight one another.
All of that stuff feels kind of out of place for the type of world Sonic takes place in. Or at the very least, it shouldn't be tied to it's main villain, because then it unnecessarily paints a morally gray area to his character that can't really be ignored. Because at some point you'd either sympathize more with Eggman and start seeing Sonic and Co as assholes for beating him or Eggman just eventually loses any sympathy points sooo...
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.I feel like it gives eggman some more depth into his character while at the same time not excusing his actions so he wouldn't end up more sympathetic anyway. If anything Eggman shouldn't be a free man anyway yet oddly is. From what I've gathered he's a sovereign citizen(I guess?) who owns the biggest robotics company in the world.
At the moment Eggman is a Silver Age style supervillain, hence the Offscreen Villain Dark Matter. Him being able to come up with such crazy things on the fly is part of the fun.
Given that GUN is no longer really important to the story (even Rouge, Shadow and Omega barely mention it any more), continually pushing Eggman's family's deep sympathetic backstory heavily involving them probably wouldn't work out. Same with Gerald Robotnik.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Adventure Time goes through a similar process with its Affably Evil Starter Villain the Ice King, and the moral grayness of the heroes' conflict with the Ice King only made the show better if you ask me.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!It would be interesting if Eggman was allowed to have more of a victory. I mean he did manage to win the ancient prototype Gear in Riders Zero G, and it would cathartic for him to at least successfully discredit some of GUN's less remorseful black ops members.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!Though, problem would be that Shadow is working with GUN by 2006, the same people who killed Maria and Gerald. So unless SEGA wrote some kind of civil war between the blacks ops part of GUN that conducted that operation, and the sect that Shadow is working with, well that could be narratively messy.
Though, the only timelines where we saw him actively working with them IIRC are 2006 and Dark Brotherhood Chronicles... both of which have become non-canon AFAIK.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!2006 was untimeline'd, but it wasn't rendered non-canon.
In fact, it's been indicated as canon so many times. Sonic Colo(u)rs DS, Sonic Generations HD, Sonic Runners(?), uh...
I do writing, feel free to check out my stories here! https://numbugwritingblog.tumblr.com/post/686233243868102656/numbugs-shared-heroic-uniI don't recall any reference to 2006 in the console version of Generations. I'm curious how Colors DS referenced 2006.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!06 made such a mess of everything that it's probably best if everyone just ignored it. It happened yet it didn't happen and it causes a massive plot hole with one of the Chaos Emeralds and don't even get me started with Blaze.
The entire Crisis City stage and I think Colors DS had a cutscene where Blaze recognized Silver or something.

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!GUN seems to have a thing for attracting people they screwed
Their commander and Shadow joined them even though they screwed them over by killing Maria
¡PONLE QUE DIGA!:"¡HUMONGOSAURIO HASTA LA MUERTE!"There was the fact that Crisis City was in the stage, but also the fact that Blaze straight up says "I never thought I'd find myself in Crisis City again!" (disclaimer: I don't remember the quote 1-1, but I do remember that being said)
And for DS, Blaze and Silver have some level of familiarity with each other, as if they've fought before, but they couldn't figure out why.
I do writing, feel free to check out my stories here! https://numbugwritingblog.tumblr.com/post/686233243868102656/numbugs-shared-heroic-uniI wouldn't put much stock in the Generations example, honestly, since the Time Eater was fucking with time at that moment and making everything all wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey.
As for the Colors DS example, I guess that's just a matter of if you want to take the Wii version of events as canon or the DS version of events.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!It would still have to be canon for it to be a thing caused by the Time Eater's wibbly wobbliness

Man, remember when people thought Sonic Adventure 2's ending meant Eggman might turn over a new leaf? And then Heroes had Metal Sonic as the villain instead of eggman?
Was anything wrong with breaking that status quo for a little while? Neo Metal Sonic could easily have carried a few more games.
