Re: not being able to be run on computers: Different file formats, etc.

I tried the game out last night. It's fun for what it is, but the level variety is scant (you don't get a new level until you've beaten 10 chapters—and you don't unlock any new characters until then either) and it gets tiring after a while. (The story is also why-did-they-even-try-this-is-just-dumb. Not that I expected anything great, just not something lame enough that it's embarrassing to read.) The music is good at least.

[up]I just skip all those little "story" (if you can even call it that) and there's one where Sonic literally goes full Dora and has to get one of the woodland critters back to their home.

Now that's some compelling ass world building, eh?

I'm pretty sure this is just a restatement of what was already stated weeks ago, and still anticipate we're getting a new console-based Sonic game sometime soon.

Physical:

I heard of this news on Wednesday night, so I know I'm late.

I really wish that we can still see Sonic and other Sega characters on consoles again. Sucks that Sega hasn't been doing so hot lately.

Why does Call of Duty set the bar so damn high each year? Why is it so successful while platformers are failing.

Runners has given an explanation as to why the Wisps are still around.

"While most of the Wisps followed the Mother Wisp back to Planet Wisp, some Wisps decided to stay behind as they liked Earth so much. They remember Sonic too and say that they will help him whenever he needs it."

But... the Wisps were never on Earth in the first place. The first time they even went to Earth was when they just brought Sonic down after rescuing him from the Nega-Wisp gravity well.

I hate to admit it, but Runners is pretty fun.

Now that's some compelling ass world building, eh?

Sigh. And thus I proceed to give even less of a shit about Runners. Nice to see Modern Sonic again though.

Would you guys rather see a sort of sequel (they share continuity but there may only be a minor reference) to Some Time with a Good Friend that's similar in tone (Sonic and Blaze chill after a party with some potentially romantic undertones) or would you guys rather see a sort of crossover between Sonic and Jet Set Radio (it's the plot of JSR but with the Sonic cast and Adaptation Expansion)?

I've never played Jet Set Radio so... shrug.

And I can't really offer a positive opinion about romance-centric fics.

Considering the haphazard nature of this thread, I don't think asking 'us' whether we want to see an idea is appropriate, rather, you should write according to your own schedule.

I'm writing a Sonic crossover with Naruto that I'll share at a later point, and I'm basing it off, and would rather see, a fic about Dr. Eggman, because I think there's a goldmine of characterization to be had there. I want to write a story where his often understated badassery comes into play. But I'm not waiting for this thread or any other to spot me an idea, I'd never get anything done. I think Sonic has a bigger "fanart/sprite comic" fandom than a "fanfiction" one, so it'd be hard finding a place or thread for Sonic fan fics.

I would also advise being careful with using the plot of one game and just filling it in with Sonic characters). I don't know what the plot of JSR is though, so maybe it'd be a perfect fit.

Alright, so I was actually gonna talk about this earlier but I got distracted by all the hubub about Sonic Runners and I wanted to get that out of the way before I mention this.

So, I was over at my cousin's place a few weeks ago and he had an import copy of Puyo Puyo vs Tetris on his Xbone and initially I was only passively interested since I only had a passing memory of what Puyo Puyo was, and I was sorta into Tetris for a bit but I could never get into Grand Master (shit's too hardcore.) Anyways, turns out Sonic Team made this game, and thats when I went from "barely interested" to "sorta interested" I guess. So Puyo Puyo has like a bajilion characters (just like Sonic) who all animey and shit (like Sonic) and sort of have weird long ass arms and shit (again, like Sonic.) So, after staring at the character select screen for a few minutes while I was gonna play Vs, it basically hit me that the characters in Puyo Puyo are basically human anime girls that actually look they fit in the [["post-Adventure Sonic aesthetic" way more compared to the realistic ass humans Sonic Team seems to want to put in the Sonic world. I mean, I'm not gonna lie I'm still not necessarily down with the idea of Sonic living a more realistic "human world" but honestly, Arle, Ringo and Amitie look like they fit in the "Sonic world" way more than Elise does.

Why don't the humans in Sonic look like that? Seriously, I mean they still don't exactly fit the Sonic aesthetic but if Sonic Team wants humans, I'd rather they go with that design style than putting realistic humans next to Sonic with his big ass head and shit.

You would have a far more solid point if you weren't comparing character designs that can park themselves comfortably within the 2D realm against designs in a franchise that's been consistently toting a 3D style everywhere it goes for years now.

[up]But it's not hard to imagine the Puyo characters polygonized just like it's not hard to imagine the 2D artwork of Sonic characters polygonized.

[up][up]Yeah, Waxing Name got at what I was trying to say about the artstyles. I mean Sonic Adventure era Sonic and co. were able to transition from Uekawa's 2D designs to 3D fairly well, I'm pretty sure Uekawa had a hand in Puyo Puyo, and because of that I'd guess that those 2D designs would probably shift to 3D fairly decently as well,

The point is Sonic Team already figured out how to do human characters in that Sonic Team/Yuji Uekawa artstyle, yet for whatever reason they were still kinda fixated on doing "realistic" humans in Sonic. (Yuji Uekawa is the character designer for pretty much everything Sonic Team's done after SA 1, which is basically the reason why all the characters from Puyo Puyo/Billy Hatcher/Samba De Amigo/whatever other "non-Sonic games" Sonic Team has done look like Sonic characters anyways.)

This is totally subjective, but the fact that Lost World and Sonic Runners don't have non-Robotnik human characters is only a good thing in my book, since "human characters in Sonic" usually equals "shits about to get really stupid really fast" (see Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06)

Ok, shifting gears a bit, in Runners I just won the ring jackpot, got 10 red rings and 3 Drill Wisps in one 5 min period via the roulette wheel. Also, apparently I'm like around #800 in the F-Star ranked players, which I don't really know what that means.

Does anyone know what happens when you beat Robotnik on the "top speed" phase of each Running segment (4th round)? I usually make it up to there but die before I have the chance to actually get to that battle so does it just repeat or does the "level" end?

Edit: Yes Mean Bean Machine was a localized version of Puyo Puyo, I actually knew that before I even knew what Puyo Puyo but then again I didn't get into Sonic until Generations (not counting that I had Rush on the DS) so wasn't around in those days.

[up]Look, I'll admit my perspective on this stuff is kinda skewed since I played Generations, then went back through the rest of the series (well I didn't even bother with Sonic 06 but you get the point.)

I'm assuming you played (what I'm gonna guess is) Shadow and SA 2 (since most agree Sonic 06 is fuckawful) back when they came out, right? Look, you can like whatever the hell you like I don't really care but you should really retry playing those ones again since it's totally possible nostalgia may be getting in the way of your better judgement (it's something I've admittedly done in the past so I try to avoid it)

@This. I went there expecting to see an actual confirmation that they're pulling out of consoles. I was less-than-surprised when it turns out it wasn't, and was just a fan reaction.

So... yeah. I'm with ShadowHog on this one - until Sega actually says they're actively getting out of consoles instead of merely saying they're focusing more on mobiles these days, I still expect there will be another console Sonic game game one of these days.

[up][up]lol no. I was way too young to be playing video games by the time SA 2 came out, and Shadow came out at a time when my parents were the ones buying video games for me. (as for why I didn't get the Game Cube port of SA 2 when it was new: I don't think we even had a Game Cube at that point.)

I have played SA 2 last Sunday, and I still love it. Shadow I'll admit is frustrating at some parts, but fun generally. I will admit that SA 2, Heroes, and Shadow were among my first Sonic games (alongside Sonic 1 and 2) when I started playing the franchise back in 2009 (though Shadow was a rental from Game Fly, and Heroes I initially had the crappy PS 2 port of Heroes before I got the Game Cube version with Shadow back in 2010).

Another game that had a large number of humans in it was Unleashed, and one of the things Unleashed actually did well was establishing worldbuilding that felt full of life, which the Sonic series has been rather hit or miss with.

Also, just assuming that the only reason people could possibly disagree with you is because they're blinded by nostalgia, especially without any actual justification for it, isn't really wise and is actually kind of rude.

[up]Yeah in retrospect I realized I sounded like a dick, but the only reason I jumped to the "it's the nostalgia" thing so quickly was because A LOT of Sonic fans tend to be blinded by nostalgia and make lots of judgements based on said nostalgia.

Shadow I'll admit is frustrating at some parts, but fun generally.

Holy fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck someone who actually agrees with me. Shadow was, to be completely honest, extremely stupid, but was still dumb fun. The gunplay was decent and Shadow ran at a decent pace so it didn't feel sluggish.

The levels, though, ugh. Most of them were fine but quite a few were just plain infuriating, like Lost Impact. I literally have never beaten that level, it's just a gigantic mess of a maze. Ow. Central City was pretty damn ow too. Honestly, any time a level made you search for X amount of [thing]s to find/kill it was painful.

Soundtrack was good too, but that's to be expected from a Sonic game. One of my favorite songs was GUN Fortress, because it had such a depressing feeling to it (the fact that the first half of the level is basically "get a bunch of fucking awesome weapons to murder everything" kind of helped too). I liked some of the cheesy ending theme songs too.
