The Liar Revealed is generally considered bad storytelling because very few people who use it actually go to the effort to reasonably justify why the character is lying about it.
But like, HTTYD justifies it by setting up why Hiccup would hide Toothless before the two meet, and this one works because Wolf spends a chunk of the movie not...quite lying about it, he just increasingly changes his mind over time.
He's not sitting there, going "I am going to lie for no reason", he's thinking "If I tell the truth, no one will believe me or they'll leave." And when he tells the truth they don't believe him, and then they leave.
It's a logical progression, not just "I have to hide this thing for no meaningful reason."
Not Three Laws compliant.Coco is another example of a movie where, even though it's pretty derivative and easy to predict, it doesn't detract from the overall quality and enjoyment of it.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonYou need to set up the consequences either before the lie happens, or they need to be logically connected to the problem and the problem has to be unavoidable.
A lot of them don't do either or do them really poorly, so you get the character trying to cover up a lie with no discernable consequences.
Not Three Laws compliant.Tropes are tools, they're not inherently good or bad, is all about execution.
It's so weird. You got a smash hit of a movie yet somehow Universal doesn't do anything about it.
EDIT: Bluray listing in amazon confirms an all new short + more.

Death is a companion. We should cherish Death as we cherish Life.Sorry for the bump, but I just find it hilarious The Bad Guys currently has $69.69m domestic.
Death is a companion. We should cherish Death as we cherish Life.A number so nice, they did it twice.
That's not all they did.
see my completed Tangled (Varian) fanfic collection! https://archiveofourown.org/works/24467056/chapters/59049532Holds up three fingers.
It just crossed my mind: it's a little ironic how in Trolls, the Bergens look much more similar to a Tolkien-esque troll than the actual Trolls do.
^ You must remember, all trolls are different
Sure, that's why I specified that I had Middle Earth-style trolls in mind.
An early bluray of the movie is out in the wild. It comes with many goodies like behind the scenes, deleted stuff, and a new short.
The short is pretty good!
Death is a companion. We should cherish Death as we cherish Life.By "the movie", do you mean The Bad Guys?
I always liked John Bauer trolls◊ myself. I would adore an animated film based around that art style.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Agreed, they are very charming-looking Gentle Giant creatures.
> I would adore an animated film based around that art style.
I could actually see Cartoon Salon or studio Ghibli making a film in that art style
New theme music also a boxYup.
Nine minutes is way too short for a short, though I suppose it works.
Death is a companion. We should cherish Death as we cherish Life.Eyes front, tropers!
Another trailer for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish just dropped!
So... Puss in Boots dies for the last time as himself, gets reincarnated as a stray cat, gets adopted by a crazy cat lady... and then Goldilocks and the three bears show up. As bounty hunters. And then he gets to be Puss in Boots again, apparently, because these death rules are confusing so far.
Puss is also riding a pencil for... reasons... at some point.
This is a weird and wild movie. Also, Puss seems to be mugging for memes half the time in this trailer. I hope he won't be like that during the entire movie.
Optimism is a duty.Annecy eventgoers also got a chance to watch the first half-hour of the film. According to SlashFilm, it's a very promising direction. An excerpt:
Instead, we get a shockingly somber, reflective, and visually stunning spaghetti Western about an aging cowboy contemplating whether there is still a place for him in the world — except it's a cat that wears boots and a little hat.
About that last sentence: Finally, something that will scratch that Rango itch I've been yearning for for the past 11 years.
It's been 3000 years…They said the same thing about Brave as in they showed the first half hour and it seemed promising.

Yeah having a predictable plot doesn't detract anything at all. It's about the whole experience and the lead up. They even cite the "liar reveal" as though that's a magical negative, forgetting that it's all about believability.
