"Only thing I've had to read out loud to understand" was exactly my reaction to the work itself, so I'd say that your comment only shows that the self-demonstrating aspect is working perfectly. :)
(I only read the first page of Finnegan's Wake. I actually enjoyed it, but didn't have the fortitude to continue any further.)
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Bump.
There are too many toasters in my chimney! The crowner has been up for nearly a month and a half (since Jun 3rd or so), and these are the two options in the green:
+12 (yeas:18 nays:6) 3.00 : 1
- Split the self-demonstrating portion into an alternate version of the page at Self-Demonstrating.Finnegans Wake
+2 (yeas:8 nays:6) 1.33 : 1
- Keep the self-demonstrating portion and add a translation of it in a separate folder
Move the self-demonsrtating part to SelfDemonstrating.Finnegans Wake is far an away the winner, with more "yea"s than the next closest choice has votes in total, and a 3:1 ratio of yeas to nays.
All that remains is to make the move and write a non-self-demonstrating version for the main page.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Now we just need to find a Troper who's actually read Finnegan's Wake to write an apt synopsis. <—Sarcasm Mode
I appear to be very late to the game, but I wanted to put in my two cents.
It's too bad we can't retain one paragraph of Wake-speak (for flavor), then just have a second paragraph that gives background and context. The solution to the clarity issues for the Main:Finnegans Wake article makes me think it will end up very boring.

Get a slant at this glossary of Pulp Detective terms. It rates. Pipe that?I've read the book, but fuck if I can explain any of it.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI don't think the English-language description has to be anywhere near as detailed as the self-demonstrating version was. In fact, it's probably better if it's not. :)
Here's a quick stab (completely off-the-cuff):
"Finnegan's Wake is a novel written by James Joyce. It took him 17 years to write, and may take nearly as long to read, as it is completely written in an idiosyncratic, made-up language that vaguely resembles English spoken with a thick Irish brogue. Critics and scholars disagree about a lot about this book, but most agree that it's about a man's dream, and that it's full of complex, layered allusions and jokes. Arguments still rage as to whether it has a plot. Some have suggested that reading it out loud is the easiest way to understand it, but if you attempt this feat, TVTropes disclaims all responsibility for any long-term effects on your throat, vocal chords, or sanity.
If you would like to read a description of the book as it should be described, see SelfDemonstrating.Finnigans Wake.

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Perfect. Why people have to overcomplicate things is beyond me. That hits it right on.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"You, sir, are An Officer And A Gentleman.
This is wonderful.

Get a slant at this glossary of Pulp Detective terms. It rates. Pipe that?So long as both quotes are kept, that seems perfect.
Should we do the move?
- Slow Clap* That was brilliant. And it isn't dry.
That's perfect. Simply perfect.
ETA: Old page moved.and new page description copied from Xtifr's post.
Shall we lock this puppy up and move on to other things?

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Before this gets locked, shouldn't the article be in the Literature namespace?
I think that's still optional, but I'm no expert.
p.s. thanks for the kind words, guys
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Yes, it should, I forgot about that.
Taken care of. Disambig in Main., Plain page in Lit. Fancy one in Self-demo. associated pages moved., self-demo indexed, discussion moved... I think that's it.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Yes it should.
Fight smart, not fair. And page type changed for disambig.
Anything I've missed?
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.I swapped the index to the literature page. Should the disambig be indexed? It doesn't have one right now.
I don't think so. Not with only two links on it and both of them have crosslinks; the Lit page has a link to the SD page, and the SD page has a button-link back to Main. and to Lit.
The only thing I see is inndexing the Main. What index(es) do disambigs go on?
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Ah. Ambiguity Index. Done.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Ok, somebody take a look at all of them, make sure everything is in the right place, all the indexes and page types are correct, all the crosswicks go to the right page, and that I haven't borked anything.
Please?

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Should we really have the trope list on both pages? That looks like a good way to have them grow completely different tropes.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickKeep the trope list on Lit and remove the one on the self-demonstrating page.
I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.Done. Locking it up. Thank you all for keeping this civil and for helping makes sure everything got put where it should be.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.
Crown Description:
What would be the best way to fix the page?
I thought it was vandalism. This is the only thing I have ever had to read aloud to understand.
My point is where is the "purge it's very existence from the surface of the earth" option. Because it would be cathartic.
