Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

[up][up] The difference is, JMS's way doesn't assassinate Spider-Man's character.

And I never outright praised it; I just meant that if it had to happen, that would be a better way.

Y'know, I really like Spider-Girl. I've been reading some of the digests and its just enjoyable.

The new Spider-girl series is pretty good. I kind of stopped following it a few issues in, but what I read I liked (except Red Hulk, wtf is Marvel's obsession with Red Hulk?). I should catch up on it.

I don't know if we're talking about the same spider-girl, I just want to get this topic away from OMD. grin

Nope. I was talking about the Spider-Man's daughter one but we can talk about the new one too. Anything awesome happen in the issues you read?

"The fact that people are STILL bitching about OMD is disturbing. If you have such deep, personal issues with what happens in a comic book, why don't you do something productive and try to break into the industry instead of crying on the internet?"

How you know we aren't?

"The current stories are some of the best there have been in years" "

None of the writers who wrote those best stories is writing Spider-Man right now. Joe Kelly? Mark Waid? Fred Van Lente? Zeb Wells? No, we got Dan Slott, who was average at his best during his Spider-Man run and is acting liek a crybaby. The only Spider-Man I'll try right nowe is upcoming Wells series, because he should be writing Big Time.

"(getting rid of JMS' "Spider-Totem" crap alone justifies OMD in my eyes)."

Don't tell me Slott went into Running the Asylum with that aspect too. If so, he is acting even more childlish than I already seen him as.

Her fight with Hobgoblin was fun, and she teamed up with Spidey (but who hasn't, these days).

Nothing I'd really call awesome though. Still a fun little series.

Recent series so it must have been the Phil Urich Hobgoblin?

And Spidey teams up with everyone, its true. Mayday Parker Spider-Girl managed to team up with him in her current time and time traveled to team up with his young in-his-prime him.

It was Ulrich Goblin, yeah.

I guess teaming up with people is one of his Superpowers. He's kind of like Wolverine in that way. He works really well in just about any team up.

Kind of ironic that he has meta popularity power when at any given time people in-comic are liable to hate and fear him.

Sorry to bring up something tangentially OMD-related again, but apparently they've been implying that Mary Jane might be the "obligatory big event death" of Spider Island. Bets on how quickly the fandom turns against Slott if this happens? Although... if he's really as good a writer as everyone says, he might just be able to make this death that everyone's dreading actually work*

I haven't seen any implications that MJ will die. Where did you see that?

[up] It hasn't been in any story, but rather in the Letters to the Editor page. In one response (to someone asking if MJ will become Peter's sidekick), the ed. said something like "it'd be easier to just kill her." And in a later issue, when asked if 'Spider Island'' would rekindle Pete and MJ's romance. the ed. said that they would be spending a lot of time together, but that romance "might not be possible."

I don't think they're hinting at her dying. Maybe the "it'd be easier to kill her" line was just a joke, I don't know.

I'd like to think them being closer, but unable to have that kind of relationship means MJ will come out of SI with her own spider powers. surprised

It's crazy, and probably wont happen, but it'd be cool, right?

So, just got Amazing 668. And I has beef.

The cover lied to me. It spun webs of deceit entrapping me in false promises and expectations. So, pretty standard for a comic cover.

The other heroes telling Spider-Man that having him fighting an army of Spider-Men might get too confusing and him acting like he was just picked last for dodgeball was pretty funny. "You have legitimate tactical concerns about me being here but on the other hand, my self-esteem is very fragile. Brb, gonna mope."

MJ telling Peter to get off his ass was pretty neat. Her being upset that she didn't get spider-powers and then looking anime annoyed in the background as Peter and Carlie swing above her was a nice touch. After all that time she had to sit on the side-lines, there's some big catastrophe that gives people powers and she misses out?

Peter rallying the spider-people to fight the other spider-people was a kind of cheesy feel good moment although I'm not sure whether Peter would like putting people in danger like that.

Jackal got a pretty funny line musing about seeing Peter on TV. And his evil plan gets alluded to. It involves knocking up Spider-King.

Anti-Venom shows up which is neat. And a fight between Anti-Venom and Flash Venom is foreshadowed.

And Carlie figures out that the Jackal is probably involved before Peter does. Was the Jackal's clonery shenanigans widely known? I honestly don't remember.

Oh, and the last page promises ninja spider bunny-girl.

Spider-UPS Man is the greatest superhero of all time. Spider-Chef who forgot to leave his spatula at work, is pretty good too.

669 was a fun issue, but I'm a little annoyed at them hinting at Carlie Cooper figuring out that Peter is Spider-man, but what can ya do?

Overall, I'm digging Spider-Island. I'm hoping New Venom and Anti-Venom have a confrontation in SI, that'd be great.

But yeah, 669 just came out this Wednesday.

So I finally got 669 weeks later. Stupid subscription.

Some thoughts.

There was a ninja spider bunny girl and she kicked Carlie in the face. Good times. Can't believe I forgot that White Rabbit existed. Didn't she have a large robot rabbit at some point? Also, ass shot on the first page. Huh.

Scorcher shows up. Holy carp, I personally haven't seen him since Untold Tales. Also, some other dude called Chance? Dunnae. Doesn't really matter since they were down within five pages. Kind of a waste of a ninja spider bunny girl.

"Girlie, you are late for a very important date... with my foot!" is a much better line than it has any right to be.

"I'd recast. She's no Gwen Stacy. Seriously, you couldn't pay me to clone her." "Cause the last thing anyone wants here... is Spider-Island: The Sequel!" Is Marvel doing that thing where they poke fun at themselves and their fans? I think Marvel is doing that thing.

Slightly annoyed that a Venom/Spider-King fight happened in the pages of another comic. I understand that Spider-Island is a big crossovery event but its annoying that they introduce the knocking up of Spider-King in Amazing and resolves it in Venom. I hope they don't do the same thing with the insinuated Venom/Anti-Venom fight. Anti-Venom shows up for another page to remind you that he's still doing that curing thing.

ALL NEW YORK WILL BE MASTER OF MAGNET!

SPIDER-JAMESON! Heh.

"Welcome to Spider-Island, where everyone has spider-powers! Well... everyone but Mary Jane Watson." Opening summary, you are a jerk.

Carlie suspicions at Peter. Ho hum.

Madame Web flips out because apparently she's tied into the Spider Web. That makes total sense. Forever.

So. The Insect Queen is back. Which was pretty obvious a couple issues ago. Was anyone clamoring for her return? The knocking up Spider-King thing makes more sense now though. She was always in favor of plans that involve m-preg.

Well, I dunno. The comic feels a little too busy, like they're trying to tell too many plot points at once. Still, the Jackal gets some good dialogue for the couple pages he manages to appear in. The villains that appear in the comic feel a little wasted*

and Peter doesn't really make much headway into the mystery. They don't really discover anything and yet the Queen is worried that they're closing in? Huh. At least the advance of the infection represents some plot progress.

Well people are closing in. It's just Venom who's making the most headway. When the TPB comes out I'm hoping for a decent two part dealy like how Marvel handled the latest X-Men family crossovers. 1 book with the Amazing Spider-man and Venom plot lines(and maybe the one shots) and then a 2nd book with the Spider-Girl, Herc, Cloak and Dagger and Kung-Fu tie ins.
