Replaying Zero Mission on Hard Mode. I beat Kraid by a hair, but Ridley put a stone wall in my progress. I tried going at it slow and methodical, tried going all out, nothing seemed to work. Frustrated, I looked up online to see how anyone else had done it. And I found the answer with the most outrageous tactic I ever saw.

Jump INTO the lava and shoot at Ridley from there. Ridley can’t get you if you’re boiling alive in the lava. evil grin

I feel like "Taking cover in the flowing magma" being a possible strategy really drives home the level of dangerous badassery on display whenever Samus and Ridley meet.

Yeah. The fact that Ridley's claws, tail, and firebreath can fuck up Samus's armor faster than Ridley can and that Samus can bunker down in lava long enough to take Ridley down is...

Yeah, that's something alright.

Finished the Pirate Labs & beat Thardus in Remastered!

I really love that sequence in the game. Aside from really enjoying Thardus as a boss, the whole sequence escaping the labs with the Thermal Visor is just so memorable.

I'm finally getting used to the new controls. Although I think overall I still do prefer the Wii ones, especially with changing beams. But I'm getting the hang of snap locking onto enemies.

Yeah, missile combos are a bit awkward. Oh well, the good ones are homing attacks anyway, except for the Sonic Boom which may as well be hitscan in all its "delete Emperor Ing" glory.

Seriously use the Annihilator Beam versus Emperor Ing. Dark Samus has always given me far more trouble. And it is the final boss, and the Annihilator Beam makes its own ammo anyway.

Finally bit the bullet and downloaded prime remastered instead of waiting for my local videogame store to get a physical copy (they were taking too long).

Really enjoying myself so far. Have returned to Phendrana with the space boots, and that's where I've left off for tonight. Gonna return tomorrow!

I'm enjoying Prime Remastered too, halfway though Phazon Mines now.

Its been about 8 years since I last played Prime 1, and I somewhat forgot how much I love the design of the game.

My only complaint really is I wish they'd added white dots to the map like the 2D games to aid in finding those last few power ups.

I think they could have added it after you activate the last Map Station and it would have been perfect.

[up]Think I've mentioned this before, but if Retro was afraid of being too precise with the clues then simply highlighting which particular rooms held secrets would've been a good middle-ground. It shows you where to look, but won't spell out just what exactly needs to be done.

Metroid Prime 3 DOES let you unlock map pins of the pickups. Would've been a nice addition to Remastered, but nay...

Replaying Fusion for the first time since Dread, and... I'm starting to realize that, for how good the game's atmosphere is, it runs afoul of Show, Don't Tell a lot. We see Samus get taken out by a single X pretty quickly in the intro, but past that the B.S.L. station is already overrun by the time you get there. The first trip to Sector 3 (PYR) is the only time where you see their efficiency in action, since there's no enemies before you unlock the hatches there.

In comparison with Dread, you spend the entire game exploring the planet and getting to see how, hostile or not, it's teeming with life... until around 3/4ths of the way through, when you accidentally unleash the X and every enemy from there on is infected. It puts into perspective how quickly they actually reproduce, and it's horrifying leaving Elun to see the once-lush Ghavoran be overtaken by them within mere minutes.

[up]x3 I was thinking that would work as well, but I figured being consistent with 3 would be better.

I'm almost done with remastered. Fun, but there's def some design decisions that show their age.

The raw amount of backtracking the game has you do is intense. The save stations are also definite design decision that shows its age (though as even Dread still uses those I suppose I should accept these are grandfathered in - though Dread also has checkpoints)

There's alot of, I'd call it borderline hostile level design? The number of times I make a jump, but the game has a roof or outcropping or just something located above Samus's head so she'll slam into it is so frequent.

One minor downgrade, projectiles no longer project light around them. Which seems like a minor thing, but with how dark some of the areas are in the game, this was a legitimate feature. The lack of gamma options or brightness toggle is also disapointing. This is a dark game, visually, and I think the new textures actually make the darkness worse.

On the upside, this feels way easier than I remember. So many bosses I remember annoyed me as a teenager. Now, I think only the omega pirate gave what can be called a challenge? Well him and the room with infinite fission metroid. Fuck that room. Real final boss of the game right there.

the room with infinite fission metroid
Try to kill it? It respawns so quickly, you wasted your time. Try to ignore it? Good chance it knocks you down while you're climbing. Screw that thing.

How Samus looks to her enemies:

That theme doesn't give hope to everyone.[lol]

Context: A fan video of Samus running to a heroic theme, that switches to the perspective of a Space Pirate as she barrels down on him....while the theme keeps playing.

Well I've gotten the Spider-ball and my sixth energy tank. Beaten Thardus. Was never able to beat him when I was younger, I chalk that up to the new control scheme being much easier to deal with then the old gamecube one. Am back in the Talon overworld and I am excited to find something new tomorrow!
