I really want Woolly World to come back because it's a very unique stage in terms of aesthetics.

the fact they chose pac-land instead of pac-maze infuriates me to no end

They chose correctly?

It could be an online only stage.

Find me literally anyone who knows Pac-Man for Pac-Land instead of you know... Pac-Man itself. And I really don't buy that it would be that hard to just get rid of the 3DS gimmick. Nobody cares about that, we just want a stage that properly represents Pac-Man and isn't total garbage to play on.

Also, we're missing the underground variant of Mushroomy Kingdom. Maybe some other variant stages as well?

Edited by FGHIK on Nov 29th 2020 at 12:56:22 PM

I missed the part where that's my problem.

I would prefer a stage based on Pac-Man World 2, perhaps Pac-Man Village, but I recognize that there's no more iconic location in Pac-Man besides the maze.

So I didn't play the 3DS version. What was up with Rainbow Road and Pac-Maze? Did they have gimmicks that are no longer valid?

My last post copied below because starting a conversation on the last post of a page is annoying to me.

So I was thinking about which historic Smash stages are no longer around, and which ones could hypothetically be brought back. The missing stages:

Smash 64:

  • not listed - Metal Bros
  • 0:57 - Planet Zebes (near-identical to Melee's Brinstar)
  • 1:17 - Sector Z (near-identical to Melee's Corneria)

Melee:

  • 1:43 - Icicle Mountain (vertical scroller)
  • 2:02 - Mushroom Kingdom (no known reason why)
  • 2:20 - Poke Floats (no stable platforms)
  • 2:50 - Mute City (similar to Brawl's Port Town?)

Brawl:

  • 3:26 - Rumble Falls (vertical scroller)
  • 3:42 - Pictochat (no strong reason, maybe platform layout?)

4 3DS:

  • 4:02 - Rainbow Road (no known reason why)
  • 4:16 - Pac-Maze (no known reason why)

4 Wii U:

  • 4:44 - Jungle Hijinks (no known reason why, maybe depth issues?)
  • 5:01 - Pyrosphere (Ridley)
  • 5:19 - Wooly World (no known reason why)
  • 5:13 - Orbital Gate Assault (beautiful but too chaotic)
  • 5:54 - Miiverse (potentially obscene, unless a "best of" is collected)

The stages I think could return (almost) as-is:

  • Metal Bros
  • Mushroom Kingdom
  • Mute City
  • Pictochat (remove layouts of issue)
  • Rainbow Road
  • Pac-Maze
  • Jungle Hijinks
  • Wooly World
  • Miiverse (remove layouts of issue)

Some stages could hypothetically return if they were given the Delfino Plaza treatment, a hub platform that moves the stage into certain layouts at certain times. However, that might fundamentally change the feel of those stages. Those are:

  • Icicle Mountain
  • Rumble Falls
  • Orbital Gate Assault

Pac-Maze's layout is amazing, fun, and unique. I wanted it back to bad, it was literally the first thing I made in the stage maker when that got added.

[up]Pac-Maze had sort of a Golden Plains gimmick where you collect dots until you unlock a Power Pellet, which makes you stronger and makes you immune to the Ghost stage hazards.

Pac-Maze's gimmick was also tied to each specific player's screen, apparently? I don't see why they couldn't have just altered it to work for one screen.

The 3DS Rainbow Road stage was an asset rip of the entire track from Mario Kart 7. It might have been too much work to recreate it from scratch in HD.

Rainbow Road is pretty much like Mario Circuit or Port Town Aero Dive, but with a more outer space look to it, so maybe that's why it was cut.

They also could have just removed the gimmick entirely, since the main draw of the stage was the unorthodox lay-out. Or, keep the Power Pellet part but remove the Ghosts, since those are already represented as an Assist Trophy.

As someone who never played the 3DS version I'd love to actually try Pac-Maze, it looks fun! 3DS Rainbow Road too.

I miss Woolly World... and I honestly love Poke Floats and just think it's a shame it's only available in a Smash game I don't like playing that much

They can make Pac-Maze work for one screen...

The ghosts would just turn blue regardless and the only thing that would potentially happen then is that players who don't understand stage gimmicks would be confused as to why they get hurt by the blue ghosts.

OR they can hurt the blue ghosts, but they can't eat them by touching them like the player who gets the power pellet.

For the other "no known reasons why" not talked about yet:

  • Mushroom Kingdom: The two stages play nothing alike but it's aesthetically identical to the 64 stage of the same name, so it's probably gone for confusion reasons.
  • PictoChat: Has a successor in PictoChat 2, the sketches are different but this is a case of one stage being replaced by another.
  • Jungle Hijinks: It's the depth issues, yeah. There's no way to make Stage Morph work with Jungle Hijinks since it's the only stage to have multiple planes like that.
  • Wooly World: I'm guessing it's also cut for Stage Morph reasons? It's pretty inoffensive as a stage but weird complications due to the "ground falls out" gimmick are the only thing I can really guess at.

I feel that they should’ve updated Mushroom Kingdom Melee to be based off the Allstars version. Maybe call it Mushroom Kingdom Melee or Koopa Kingdom to differentiate it from Mushroom Kingdom 64

Thanks Captain Obvious, I was saying that they should’ve updated the stage’s appearance to look like the Overworld stages from the Allstars port/remake of Super Mario Bros to make it distinct from Mushroom Kingdom in Smash 64. Plus it’s the only non-scrolling stage to have the ? Blocks.

Jungle Hijinxs is the stage I miss most. I heard they cut it because the foreground/background thing conflicts with stage morph, but it's such a nice stage aesthetically that I wouldn't mind if they brought back just the background.

Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

I kinda wish they had brought back the Miiverse stage, but with the background drawings being pre-existing ones done by staff. That would've been really charming.
