A lot of people are forgetting these are more guidelines, not hard rules. Often, he doesn't pick characters from a series that doesn't have a future. It means that they're simply less likely, not impossible. Things like retros are obviously a different category regardless of this.
His biggest hard rule is "must originate in a video game", while the rest are more guidelines he often follows, but can ignore in certain situations.

I'd argue that the Dr. Mario doesn't really qualify as having 'no future' or being a one-off, considering it's Mario in a lab coat and there have been more than one Dr. Mario game.
But yeah, that stuff was more guidelines than written in stone rules. Still marks against potential characters, but not a deal breaker.

Actually, they created a fully developed regular Luigi just to throw people off. Sakurai wants Dr. Luigi to be a real surprise.

I actually did come up with an idea for Dr. Luigi being an Echo Fighter for Dr. Mario on this forum a while back.

I could get down for a Dr. Luigi echo for either Dr. Mario or Luigi, or maybe as an alternate skin, though I don't really expect it to happen. Admittedly there are probably other choices of similar development time that would excite people more.

If it's alright with you guys, I would like to talk about potential new stages now. I have more, but for now I just wanna share two ideas I had real quick;
- Mario Party: Based off of the spin-off series of the same name, the stage itself would just be a generic board game not based off of any board in particular, but would have multiple references to many of the games in the series. Shy Guys would be the participants of the stage's "party" similar to how they're all the racers in the Mario Kart stages, and the major gimmick of this stage would be transitioning to multiple minigames throughout the series' history, like Coin Shower Flower from the first game and/or Rotisserie Rampage from DS.
- Lorule Field: Since Zelda has her Link Between Worlds design, I think it would be fair to expect a stage from that game. The idea is that it would be a large, canyon-like stage similar to Gaur Plains.

Or a Donkey Kong stage based on either the Minecart Madness or Fear Factory stages from Donkey Kong Country. I mean, I'd personally prefer some more love for DKC2 (like, say Krazy Kremland, or a Zinger hive), but I can't deny that the former is just more iconic.

Actually, wasn't Mushroomy Kingdom basically a stage with an "echo" design anyway? It had 1-1 and 1-2 as options, with no differences beyond the aesthetics.
