How? Before Toriyama started white-washing them, the Saiyans were implied to be just as bad as Frieza.

Isn't "survive in space" exactly what Movie Broly did when Freeza destroyed the planet? He even brought his dad along for the ride.

Movie!Broly did survive in space even though that's always been one of the canonical Saiyan weaknesses; I've heard people argue that the shield he created held in air, but there's no way it held *enough* that he could have gotten to another planet in that time with so little air.
So technically making him a mutant who can breathe in space is just filling in that plothole; but it doesn't explain why Paragus, who was to all extents and purposes a regular Saiyan, survived as well, since Baby Broly took him along for the ride.
Really, Broldy's backstory is completely unsalvageable.

How vaporized was the planet? Maybe Broly and Paragus found a space pod that was still flyable? I'm guessing the writers didn't think about it that hard.
Very vaporized, and they are seen flying off unassisted.
