No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

Now that they've started moving into the 42nd millennium, I'm wondering how long it is until in-universe it's at least 40,000 years since the game came out, which would be 987.M42 or 41,987 CE

In-universe, nobody actually knows what the year is anymore, after Guilliman noticed there are huge discrepancies. A civil war erupted in the Inquisition over the dating system.

In a galaxy full of planets with different conversion rates to Terran standard, poor interstellar communication, and with all FTL and interstellar communication occurring through a time-warping hell dimension, that's really the only reasonable outcome.

Finished reading the short story The Last Church today and I must say that it is probably one of my favourite 40K short stories. It was very engagingly written and gives a great insight into life on Terra towards the end of the Unification Wars.

Adeptus Titanicus: Horus Heresy is out for pre-order today. Unfortunately due to the price I am only able to afford the basic rules set at the moment sad(especially as the Blood Bowl cheerleaders went on pre-order yesterday and I wanted one of the Made-to-Order WFB Dragons that went up today as well - too many good things).

Next weekend's pre-orders: Tooth & Claw (Space Wolves vs. Genestealer Cult Box Set with a Primaris Battle Leader for the Wolves and a new Cult character, the Abominent); Codex Adeptus Astartes: Space Wolves with the usual dice, cards and Limited Edition; the return of the extra Death Guard Marines.

I wonder if they will bring back the loyalist Primarchs who are still alive?

I mean, Gulliman already has the stage set for a new era of competency from the Imperium, why not go looking for Russ and Corax while he's at it?

[up]Well, we did get one post-Heresy story for Corax. And it is clear he has awakened a good portion of his psychic potential-the novella plays out like a horror story from the view of the Word Bearers, who have to call in Lorgar the Daemon Prince to save them.

Isn't this the same exclusive story that kind of confirm to some people that the Primarchs really are greater daemons of the Emprah in material bodies? Oh and Corax still kicks the ass of Daemon Lorgar.

[up]Yeah, the implications tweaked more than a few people-with some fans wondering if the concept of Leman Russ returning as a bipedal werewolf the size of a Reaver Titan might be less tongue-in-cheek than initially imagined.

I still think that Russ will have a version of the Wulfen Curse that allows him to go full giant wolf.

40K doesn't do the "two models for a single unit, one for when they transform" thing, does it?

In an older edition, I could see them having a thing where you roll at the start of the battle to see if you get wolf-man in power armor or man-wolf wreathed in warp fire, but I imagine they wouldn't want to leave something like that to chance now.

[up]Sort of-in earlier editions, a chaos player had to show up with chaos spawn models in order to use Gift of Chaos via sorceror, to represent enemies being turned mid-game. Also, the original 3rd ed Greater Daemons had to generally be summoned by sacrificing an aspiring champion in one of your units. Not to mention the Death Company headache for Blood Angels players.

How much is that Space Wolves/Genestealer box set?

It will probably be around the same price as the Adeptus Mechanicus vs. Necrons Forgebane set (£95) but they have said that the price would be lower than buying the kits separately even taking out the stuff you can only currently get in the set.

The Abominent looks real cool and real grotesque.

Any speculation at what it does? I doubt it'll help Cult Ambush roles, but we can hope.

[up]To quote from the article I linked to:

The Abominant – a vile fusion of Aberrant and gene-matter gifted from the Patriarch itself trades the psychic power and cunning of other Genestealer Cults leaders for unspeakable strength and durability. Capable of smashing anything from enemy leaders to heavy battle tanks to bits, he might not be subtle – but who needs to be when you’ve got a power sledgehammer?

Warhammer Community Preview for the Tooth & Claw fluff:

VIGILUS

Vigilus is a planetary asset deemed vital to the Imperium’s continued survival. Situated on the far side of the Nachmund Gauntlet – the only stable route through the dreaded Cicatrix Maledictum – the strategic importance of Vigilus to the Imperium cannot be overstated.

Vigilus comprises a number of continent-sized hivesprawls that, in recent years, have become filled to overflowing with refugees seeking to escape the horrors besetting the worlds of the Imperium Nihilus beyond its aegis. Each such sprawl is protected by psychically charged Bastion-class force fields that render comatose any who would seek to breach their boundaries, enabling the defenders to slaughter them at leisure. These force fields proved so effective that even when an Ork Waaagh! smashed into Vigilus, the greenskins were unable to assail the hivesprawls beyond, so took to seeking entertainment elsewhere by engaging in violent races across the sweeping open plains that separate the vast hivesprawls.

However, since the Great Rift tore across the galaxy, these Bastion-class force fields began to experience glitches, and eventually collapsed entirely to leave the hivesprawls open to attack. To make matters worse, the tide of Orks that poured past the inactive force field networks also had other, unforeseen consequences…

THE CLAW OF THE THIRSTING WYRM

For many years, a Genestealer Cult calling itself the Claw of the Thirsting Wyrm had been thriving in the shadows of Vigilus. Having taken root in the subterranean depths below the militarised reservoir known as Greigan Hollow, many of their number had never seen the sky before their bloody uprising brought them to the planet’s surface. Unbeknownst to the Vigilite defenders, the threat posed by the Ork Waaagh! that attacked the planet’s hivesprawls had directly forced the cult’s hand, for their long-planned time to rise was still a few months off.

Despite the initial successes achieved by roving kill teams of Skitarii sent to counter these new attacks, every attempt to track the Genestealer Cultist threat to its source met with failure. Assailed by xenos from without and within, the Aquiliarian Council that governed Vigilus sent out a desperate call for aid – unless the Genestealer Cults could be eliminated, Vigilus was as good as doomed.

STRIKE FORCE ICEPELT

A strike force from the Blackmanes Great Company, led by Primaris Battle Leader Haldor Icepelt, had been thrown wildly off course as it travelled to reinforce the beleaguered Imperial armies battling the Chaos forces rampaging across the Stygius Sector. Upon receiving the distress signal from Vigilus, Icepelt immediately ordered his ship, Wind of Fimnir, to change course. The Battle Leader was acutely aware that, should Vigilus fall, any retreat from the Stygius Sector could become impossible. Upon arrival, the Space Wolves vessel forced a passage through the flotilla of Ork spacecraft orbiting Vigilus and Strike Force Icepelt made planetfall.

By relying on their incredibly acute senses – a trait of the Canis Helix unique to the gene-seed of the Space Wolves Chapter – and the instinctive hunting skills inherited by those born of Fenris, the Space Wolves were able to achieve results that even the most advanced technology of the Adeptus Mechanicus had failed to deliver. Within a matter of days, the Space Wolves were on the trail of the Genestealer Cult’s that had eluded the defenders of Vigilus for months. But it was only when Icepelt led his warriors into the ruined cityscape of Greigan Hollow that the full extent of the Genestealer Cults menace was revealed and the true battle for the survival of Vigilus began…

If all the Abominant got going on is big stompy boy then I doubt he'll be that much more effective at tank busting than 4 Abberants with power hammers coming out of Cult Ambush with a Primus.
