Historical is the umbrella term in this case.

I really wish the BBC would lose the "alien threat" mandate.

Well, there was no alien threat in Demons of the Punjab, or Arachnids in the UK. But they only count on technicalities.

A Who episode where the only fantastic eliment is the time travel which gets the team there has been a long time coming.

It had an alien red herring, which I think counts in spirit even if not technically. A pure historical could work but I think if they want a social message it's just more room to mess up.

[up][up][up] Didn't they lift that mandate for this season?

[up][up] Let's not forget Rosa. That was a time traveling racist human. Sci-Fi but not exactly "alien threat".

There's no evidence the mandate existed nor that it's been lifted. Like "every season must have Daleks", folks have extrapolated from available evidence.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

The last "pure historical" (no alien or time travel interference other than the Doctor themselves), if I recall correctly, was "Black Orchid," during the Fifth Doctor's first series.

What? NO! I already had to wait nearly a year for series 11, I don't wanna wait over a year for series 12.

The article says it may or may not be delayed. There is nothing actually substantial that says it will be.

I keep getting the feeling that Doctor Who is just gonna resort to switching between autumn and spring and have a season every 18 months.

Its only a rumour, but the fact that they haven't already jumped at announcing Jodie's second season does raise some concerns.Especially considering the rating have been on a consistent decline.

The ratings are higher than Capaldi's era and match Tennants era but the fact is that the rating have been lowering with each week. It may rise up near the finale but so far its downhill

The first four week it placed 3rd on most episodes with 5th on Rosa in rankings, but the last two weeks its plummeted from 6th to 10th

Plus its possible that initial viewings were so high was due to the hype of a female Doctor and a new showrunner. This is speculation of course

[up][up]I'm not watching any youtube Doctor Who videos (mostly because none I find are good), I'm working mostly off what it says on rating on the Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who_(series_11)

Yeah, but if you look at almost all other seasons, you'll notice that ratings decline there, too: Season 10, for example, started off with 6.68 million and ended with 5.30 million (not including the Christmas special). Season 8, Capaldi's first season, started with 9.17 million and ended with 7.60 million.

So far, Jodie's first season has been doing extremely well, with it's premiere reaching over 10 million viewers in the UK. And the show hasn't dipped below 6 million yet, which is nice.

Believe me, Doctor Who is doing just fine — even better than under Capaldi's run, too.

I already acknowledged that, I'm talking about Jodie's seasons on its own standards and how its been declining with only a slight rise in between Rosa and Arachnids in the UK.

Rating might go back up but so far its a decline with each episode this season no matter how you cut it.

Plus audience reviews so far seem to be lukewarm at best on site like Rotten Tomatoe and Metacritic.

PS: Demons in the Punjab had 5.77 million overnight viewers, so i has gone under 6 million. Ironically the best episode is the least watched, word of mouth might cause to be another slight rise in viewers in next episode but considering we're already halfway through the series I doubt it'd recollect that many.

I mean, viewing figures are affected by a bunch of things. Taking a brief look:

  • Series 1: Highest Rose (duh) at 10.81, lowest Bad Wolf (6.81). Normal first episode bump, jumped up and down a fair bit.
  • Series 2: Highest Christmas Invasion at 9.84, lowest Satan Pit (6.08). Pretty similar pattern, though notably Rise of the Cybermen to Satan Pit was a consistent drop, then a consistent rise for the last few.
  • Series 5: Highest Eleventh Hour at 10.09, lowest The Lodger (6.44) Up and down again
  • Series 8: Highest Deep Breath (9.17), lowest Flatline (6.71). Small slide down over the first six, up and down again
  • Series 11 thus far: Highest The Woman Who Fell to Earth (10.96), lowest Tsuranga Concundrum (7.76) but looking like Demons might do worse. Decline every episode thus far.

That's really not how ratings work. You don't compare them to themselves, you compare them to previous seasons. And you can't just say that "ratings are declining," because ratings always decline.

PS: Demons in the Punjab had 5.77 million overnight viewers
Notice how the wikipedia page doesn't have "Demons of the Punjab" yet? That's because it's not listing any overnight viewers, because overnight ratings are generally no longer accurate and a lot more people tend to watch via other means.

[up][up]Yes they can. I already said its doing comparatively good to other seasons, but that it has had no significant rise at any time.

Even season 10 at a rise of 0.54 million between Thin Ice and Knock Knock and 0.59 between Oxygen and Extremis.

While season 11 only had a rise of 0.04 between Rosa and Arachnids in the Uk. Even season 10's lowest rise in viewers was 0.38 which is still 9 times more than between Rosa and Arachnids.

Whilst this season overall has more viewers, season 10 was more consistent in bringing viewers back.

In other words there's more people in the boat for season 11 than 10 but they're leaving in far bigger droves and not coming back

Also it does show over night ratings for Demon in the Punjab look in the broadcast and reception part of the page and its still relevant because people who watch the episode on debut night are more likely to be people who come back to watch more

Okay, look. Pretty much every season of Doctor Who sees a decline in ratings as it goes on - that’s honestly just how it works. Why is it a cause for alarm now?

Oh God! Natural light!
