YMMV / Zardy's Maze

Go To

  • Bragging Rights Option: Picking up the flashlight at the beginning of a run is optional, and not doing so will leave you defenseless against Zardy, make you unable to see Pumpkin Crawlers until they latch on to you, and make you unable to stun Pumpkin Jacks.
  • Creepy Cute: While the Pumpkin Crawlers are absolutely annoying, they can also be kind of cute. Even the Pumpkin Jacks can be this, with their giggles and silly walk cycle.
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • Pumpkin Jacks come in teams and are scattered throughout the maze in usually large amounts, even though they're easily avoided thanks to the cornfield, it doesn't make them any less annoying when chased by major threats such as Zardy or in narrow areas with no turns near.
    • Rattlers. Their presence is indicated by a rattling noise, they appear to know your location on the map regardless of where you are and will shoot grappling hooks when far away from the player. While their aim is questionable, you're given no room for dodging in narrow areas, much less if enemies such as Zardy or Pumpkin Jack are present. You're damned if two or more Rattlers ambush you from different sides.
  • Goddamned Bats: Pumpkin Crawlers will appear as a green vine on the ground only visible through activating the flashlight; upon stepping on it, they will slow down the player and disable them from jumping. The only way to get rid of them is to kill them using the axe, which will alert any nearby Pumpkin Jacks. Sounds horrible enough already? In that case, you'll be glad to know that they will also spawn a Pumpkin Jack on death.
  • Older Than They Think: Zardy and much of his gang actually originate from very old sketches and even a flash animation that SwankyBox made long before Zardy's Maze came out.
  • That One Level: The final two Challenge Mode levels:
    • Needle In A Haystack makes the maze significantly darker than usual, and the player also doesn't start with the axe like in other levels, having to instead find it in the maze before they can destroy the weed. Thankfully, it's somewhat remedied by excluding the two enemies the axe is required to fend off, that being the Pumpkin Crawlers and the Cornstalkers.
    • The Pumpkin Army puts players in a maze with five weeds to destroy, which doesn't sound that much worse than a normal run at first... until one destroys a Pumpkin Crawler and realizes that there are eleven Pumpkin Jacks in the level, and one of them is huge.
