  • Harsher in Hindsight: The story reveals that Shanks never took Luffy as a cabin boy because he and Buggy were both traumatized from their time as cabin boys for the Roger Pirates, and both resolved to never take in a child until they have to. The film One Piece Film: Red reveals that not only did Shanks adopted and raised a girl named Uta after finding her in a treasure chest when she was a baby, but he had to leave her behind in the country of Elegia when he and his crew took the blame for the destruction of the kingdom that was unwittingly caused by Uta and her Sing-Sing Fruit. That would tragically lead to Uta becoming the Anti-Villain Big Bad of the film and finally dying in her father's arms after using the last of her strength to free the captive civilians and heroes from the Sing-Sing World.
  • Informed Wrongness: Kuma sending the Straw Hats to various islands where they can grow stronger (on Dragon's orders) is treated as the man horribly endangering all of them needlessly, even by the people who insist the crew isn't remotely ready to enter the New World. Some readers couldn't help but point out that there wasn't any particularly viable alternative to Dragon's plan. Also the two protesting most heavily over how Dragon's plan endangered the crew, Yasopp and Shanks, abandoned their children (biological or adoptive) a decade prior and had no problem with them sailing Paradise which is already a death trap to most crews.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: One of the main complaints regarding the series is how it ignores how canon establishes the world is somewhere between A World Half Full and Earn Your Happy Ending. Instead, pretty much everyone gets an Adaptational Angst Upgrade, injuries that are relatively minor in canon are treated as potentially fatal, and the world in general feels much darker even with multiple villains dying. Not helping matters is that the author spends roughly a third of the story having various characters lambast the former Roger Pirates for mourning their captain too long.
