• Adaptation Displacement: The novel by Donald G. Payne (writing as James Vance Marshall) was long ago eclipsed by the film.
• Angst? What Angst?: The kids don't ever seem all that shaken up by the fact that their father killed himself after trying to murder them.
• Best Known for the Fanservice: Perhaps unsurprisingly, Jenny Agutter's swimming scene overshadows the rest of the movie for a lot of people.
• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Too many to list. The film frequently cuts away from the protagonists to focus on other scenes that have little to do with them. We see some researchers operating a weather balloon, aborigines investigating the ruined car, and some white people overseeing aboriginal laborers making tourist souvenirs, among others.
• Vindicated by History: The film was very controversial in Australia when it was first released, since it was made by outsiders (American producers, British creative team and lead actors), but is now embraced as the film that kicked off the Australian New Wave.
