YMMV / Uncle Tom's Bungalow

Go To

  • Fair for Its Day:
    • Having the rich white girl Little Eva being friends with the poor black girl Topsy would've been quite progressive for the time, and the fact that Eva buys Uncle Tom off of Simon Simon purely so that Tom wouldn't be beaten shows that while she probably doesn't realise that slavery is wrong (she's a child, after all), she's clearly against slaves being abused. Also, the fact that the slave owner Simon Simon is portrayed as an evil, cruel bully shows that Warner Bros. wanted to paint slavery in a deservedly bad light. Uncle Tom also gets a happy ending, with him being a free and wealthy man (though they lose some points by having Tom gain his wealth through cheating at dice).
    • The same with the remake "Uncle Tom's Cabana" where Uncle Tom goes from being a poor black farmer to a successful business owner in one night. Additionally, despite ethnic and class differences, his relationship with Red is defined by mutual friendship and respect with zero sexual undertones. Especially since Uncle Tom is the only male character to not fall into lust crazed spasms at the sight of her and even rescues her from a white molester.
