  • It Was His Sled: The book / movie is mostly know for the fact that the female protagonist gets a brain tumor and dies at the end - which would come as a twist ending if you didn't know that beforehand, as most the story is a story of true love (and gratuitous sex scenes thrown in). Her getting ill doesn't happen until the last part of the book, and the last 10 minutes of the 100+ minute movie, though, so it is really just a small part of the story and a twist ending.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: The film is very much a typical early 1970s film in fashion, style and attitude. Eric and Olga's free love and free sex behavior seems very irrational and dangerous in less innocent decades of today.
  • Values Dissonance: How the medical staff in the hospital, once Olga gets ill, treats her, is thoroughly outdated by modern medicine standards. Among other things, her doctor tells Eric (technically at least separated with her at that point, or possibly even divorced from her) of her diagnosis before telling herself; and nurses scold her in a very condescending way when she has a fit / panick attack caused by her brain tumor.
