  • Award Snub: Considering how well it has aged, it was deservedly nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the Academy Awards in 1942. However, it lost to Der Fuehrer's Face.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Screwballs, obvious parody of the Nazis they are, cause all of the problems in this short, and it's shocking just how effective they are.
    • The sheer whiplash of their entrance is scary on its own, with the bright and colorful landscape suddenly shifting to a hellish red with the boom of a lightning strike. It even scares Jan and Janette.
    • And that's just the start, once the two kids hide, they bring out tanks and bomber planes to completely destroy all of the windmills and lay the entire landscape to waste. And then they start actively shooting at them, even though they're both completely defenseless and fleeing for their lives. Jan even gets separated from Janette and cries out for her, scared that she might have been killed.
  • Values Resonance: Out of all the WartimeCartoons ever made during World War II, this is one of only a small handful that feels like it hasn't aged a day since its original release. Jan and Janette are two innocent kids/teenagers (it's hard to tell) who live in Holland, only for their home to be invaded and destroyed by the Screwballs. While it was originally an allegory of the Nazis invading The Netherlands, it can just as well apply to any military force pillaging and killing innocent civilians from anywhere else, an atrocity that is sadly still repeated today.
