  • Critical Dissonance: Critics were not too impressed by the show, while audiences were a lot more positive and were disappointed not to get a second season; e.g. on Rotten Tomatoes it has critic score of 37% and an audience score of 83%. Most audiences were watching for the sentimental Fantastic Romance at the center of the story and it's generally agreed that Theo James and Rose Leslie gave good performances, although critics (and some more negative audience reviews) felt there wasn't much to the plot outside of this and that it got needlessly convoluted to fill up time. A lot of critics also had a hard time overlooking the unintentionally creepy implications of the romance (due to the time-travelling, Clare is a child when she first meets her adult future husband, who is aware he will eventually marry her - notably, the show itself acknowledges the parallels with grooming, however briefly), given how often it gets brought up in professional reviews; fans of the show (and the book before it) are generally more willing to defend this plotline.
