YMMV / The Supergirl from Krypton (2004)

Go To

  • Audience-Coloring Adaptation: When Kara Zor-El first appeared in The Supergirl From Krypton (1959), she was about fifteen years younger than Superman, and her parents sent her to Earth expecting that her adult cousin would take of her. When Kara was introduced to the Post-Crisis continuity, she was about fifteen years "older" than Superman, born long before Krypton's destruction, and was sent to Earth to save her life AND take care of her baby cousin, but suspended animation shenanigans caused her to arrive thirty years late. This story arc became so influential in shaping the character's popular view that everybody assume that Kara being older than Superman has always been the case, and nobody can imagine a Supergirl origin where she was born after Superman.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Superman, annoyed by Batman and Wonder Woman's hesitance to go after Kara, unintentionally offends them by bringing up Jason Todd and Donna Troy, both of whom were dead at the time. A year later, as part of the lead-up to Infinite Crisis, Jason and Donna came back.
  • More Popular Replacement: from 1988 to 2004, DC tried -and failed- to replace Kara Zor-El with several short-lived non-Kryptonian Supergirls (Matrix, Andromeda...), before giving up and reintroducing a modern version of Kara. Post-Crisis Kara quickly became more successful than her barely-remembered predecessors, even making the leap to non-comic media, making appearances in different animated DC shows and even having her own TV Show.
  • Saved by the Fans: DC Comics killed off the original Supergirl in the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, believing she was diminishing Superman's "uniqueness", and replaced her with several non-Kryptonian substitutes. Nonetheless, Kara Zor-El fans spent eighteen years campaigning for her return until DC finally gave way and brought her back in 2004.
  • Theiss Titillation Theory: After brainwashing her, Darkseid forces Kara to wear high heels, skintight pants and an impossible bra.
