- Cult Classic: The movie languished in obscurity for decades, but it had a small, but dedicated group of people who held it in esteem thanks to its well-done special effects, unique Genre Shift, and haunting and chilling depiction of the Buddhist hell. Thank's to Criterion, however, it's finally been able to enjoy some recognition and appreciation from a much larger audience.
- Nightmare Fuel: The big "everyone's in Hell" scene is... notable, for its sheer brutality. This ain't some polite Western Hell, no siree; this is full-blown balls-to-the-walls Buddhist Hell, complete with graphic depictions of flaying, eye gouging, boiling alive, and worse.
- Visual Effects of Awesome: The effects of the Hell sequence are as brutal as they are really well made for a 1960's Japanese film.
