• Character Rerailment: Fans were happy to see Lisa's childish characterization being brought back in this episode, as it has been downplayed over the decades as the show went on in favor of her Soapbox Sadie persona.
• Recycled Script: Season 1's "Life On the Fast Lane" similarly deals with Marge feeling slighted on her birthday. In that case, the offender is Homer, who buys her a bowling ball he clearly expects will only be used by him.
• Spiritual Successor: This could be seen as one for "Marge Be Not Proud" with the main focus on the strained character relationship with Marge and their kids (albeit with Lisa in the picture this time around instead of just Bart). Fittingly, both episodes were written by Mike Scully, who returned to pen this episode.
