- Jerkass Woobie: Gordon, a widower who lost his home and his wife in a tragic fire, is clearly a broken man, but it doesn't excuse his trying to rape Natalie after she decides to leave his trailer.
- Slow-Paced Beginning: The film doesn't really get going until Natalie meets Jimmy. That happens at the 18-minute mark.
- Woobie: Dear God, poor Jimmy. He's an orphan. His brain injury ended his football career and his college education. His college basically bribes him to leave. His ex-girlfriend Ellen wants nothing more to do with him. The one person who's shown him some compassion, Natalie, has deeply conflicted feelings about him. He loses most of his money to the slimy "reptile ranch" guy. And ultimately he's killed by a little girl after doing something heroic.
