- Anvilicious: There are small signs in the illustration background of a beach scene that say "MORE" and "MORE" and "MORE". Their obscurity is testament to how well Shaun Tan illustrates vast and detailed imagery.
- Tear Jerker: Most of the story for some people, but especially the part in the big office building where a mysterious worker tells the protagonist to not leave The Thing "here", saying it's "a place for forgetting things and smoothing things over". Then comes a scene where the protagonist spends hours of effort following a weird symbol arrow in order to find a better place for his companion to live from now on, which works.
