YMMV / The Longest Johns

Go To

  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With a lot of other music groups, including shanty bands such as Kimber's Men and Fisherman's Friends, but also Bristol-based musicians such as Natalie Holmes and Sam Brookes that guest starred in music livestreams.
    • The fanbase for the Yogscast and the band overlapped quite a bit already, but the overlap was solidified after the Johns dropped in for a (short-notice) livestream for the 2021 Jingle Jam and joined the Yogs on their own Twitch streams.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Comparing Andy to Jon Snow from Game of Thrones was a popular comment on YouTube for some time owing to their somewhat similar appearances. This one eventually died out.
    • "Robbie's Choice" donations on their music livestreams have become memes in their right. Robbie's occasional status as the butt of the joke often resulted in the fans invoking Throw the Dog a Bone and donating money to let him pick the next song, so much that the Johns's algorithm for balancing song choices ended up pushing it back down for a while.
    • "ADEQUATE", typically cited when the Johns do a good performance of something. It's meant positively and affectionately.
    • In January 2021, "Wellerman" exploded into a meme in its own right, and for months even individual lines would become quoted endlessly.
  • Signature Song:
    • Their version of "Wellerman." It's still far and away their most famous work.
    • Prior to "Wellerman" exploding in popularity, "Randy Dandy-O" was widely their most famous song, partly because they sang it when playing Sea of Thieves in a video.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • "Bones in the Ocean", which largely relates to a sailor dealing with Survivor's Guilt and contemplating ending their own life to join their dead friends.
    • "Crossing the Bar" has elicited this reaction from some listeners, for reasons that vary from the combination of harmonies to the discussion of death. Not surprising, as it is a sung rendition of the poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
