  • Someone compares Bernie to "one of those people's cars designed by Dr. Porsche." That is of course the immortal Volkswagen Beetle ("Volkswagen" being the German for "people's car"), designed by Porsche at Adolf Hitler's behest in the late 1930s but not produced en masse until after the war.
  • When discussing Bernie's speech at the Wannsee villa, Guttner, one of Goebbels' minions, says that Heydrich invited him to "a breakfast meeting" there in January but he couldn't make it. That's a reference to the infamous Wannsee conference in which Heydrich explained to the underlings in various departments that Germany was going to kill all the Jews in Europe.
  • Bernie meets Kurt Waldheim in Croatia in the summer of 1943. When Waldheim ran for President of Austria in 1986 a big scandal broke out over his wartime service. While the extent of Waldheim's participation in war crimes is still controversial, he had previously claimed in his biography that he was discharged in 1942.
  • When Leuthard meets Bernie again in 1956, he shows Bernie his yacht, called The Zaca. This was actually Errol Flynn's yacht.
