• Squick: Ying Zheng puts a severed deer head in his mother's bed. She and her lover wake up to find they're covered with its blood.
• The Woobie:
  • Things go from bad to worse for Lady Jing. She gets pregnant after Ying Zheng rapes her. Then Lady Chu forces her to drink an abortifacient. As if that wasn't enough, she's murdered to frame Lady Chu.
  • Lady Han discovers she's pregnant with her dead lover's child. Min Dai, who she thinks is her friend, helps her get out of the palace. Then Min Dai arranges the murder of Lady Han and her unborn child.
  • Queen Dowager Zhao loses both her former and current lovers, sees two of her sons murdered, and is locked up in a palace on her own, all because of her other son. Everything she suffers causes a severe Sanity Slippage. When Ying Zheng visits he finds her cradling and talking to a pillow because she thinks it's her dead children.
