YMMV / The Kid and the Camera

Go To

  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Cailen trips and breaks his camera because he got distracted by something he looked at from afar. Given that the kidnapper behind the Cipsneed was stalking Cailen for a long time, it's very likely that what distracted him was a quick glance of the stalker from afar.
    • The Cipsneed's name is a few letters shy of Kidsneed; the name for a brand of video baby monitors. It doubles as both a Meaningful and Ironic Name. As not only are Kidsneeds a type of camera meant to watch kids with, but a camera meant for parents to use to know if their kids are safe.
    • The Cipsneed's name is also an anagram for "need pics". The whole film is about the Cipsneed luring Cailen so he can fix his camera and let him take good pictures, or pics, again. It crosses over to Fridge Horror if you take it that the Cipsneed also needs "pics" of Cailen.
  • Obvious Judas: His appearance, demeanor and the title stating the short is a horror film make it obvious the Cipsneed isn't to be trusted. The real twist is that he's not even real, but instead a puppet or costume used by a very real predatory human.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: The reveal that the Cipsneed is simply a puppet or a fantasy used by a normal human reframes the film into this. There's no supernatural elements in the short, and everything is completely plausible in real life, with many children being abducted by predators in a similar fashion to the one seen in the film.
  • Viewer Name Confusion: Many viewers, likely due to being unfamiliar with the name "Cailen", instead hear the child's name as "Caleb", as well as (fairly reasonably) assuming the fairy Cipsneed's name to be spelled with a K.
