YMMV / The Dysasters

  • Anti-Climax Boss: The final confrontation unfolds, Foster and Tate are finally in the same place as Charlotte and Bastien, but so are the Core Four! And they... insult each other in a really pathetic and petty manner. And then the teenagers say loving affirmations to before calmly and effortlessly calling on their elements to do away with them.
  • Designated Evil: Dr. Rick Stewart is evil because he created failed experiments and wants to hunt down the teens to fix his first creations, yes. But he's also an addict and for that, Mark tells Eve she should OD him on her crystal magic so he dies. This is the only solution suggested for his addiction.
  • Engaging Chevrons: Most of the middle of the book feels like this. Foster and Tate hang out at the safe house getting to know each other and learning to use their powers, with occasional lip service paid to the idea that they're trying to decipher Dr. Rick's notes.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Foster and Tate have no chemistry, spend much of the first half of the book insulting each other and treating each other terribly, but they eventually learn to get along and fall in love because... they're both pretty?
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Everyone has elemental super powers! Foster and Tate can create tornadoes and sort of fly! The Core Four also have elemental powers, but their older and more experienced, albeit less stable, and they're chasing Foster and Tate to the ends of the- wait. Oh. Foster and Tate are actually going to sit in a safe house for most of the book, and the Core Four are mostly going to sit around moping and trying to find online activity from Foster, Tate, or their families while also luring out Charlotte and Bastien. That's less exciting.
