YMMV / The Darkest Tales

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The game's art-style is very nostalgic and beautiful, fitting the fairy tale theme.
  • Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game: Many reviewers seem to agree that the plot does a better job of entertaining you than the actual gameplay. The combat mechanics especially earned some heated criticism for being poorly thought out, as well as the ridiculous hit-boxes of some of the enemies, made worse by the fact that the game has contact damage.
  • Demonic Spiders: The Flying Monkeys in The Selfishness. They're everywhere and attack on sight, which can be very annoying in a level this reliant on climbing and jumping. One single screaming monkey is fully capable of sending Teddy all the way down to the jungle floor again.
  • Game-Breaker: The Shotgun makes hash out of most enemies, particularly when paired with the Explosive Shot.
  • Goddamned Bats: Most of the flying enemies fall into this. Most of them are very difficult to hit due to their small size and movement speed. Add to that that they actually dodge your attacks and you end up with a very irritating enemy type that unfortunately infests every single area of the game.
  • Nausea Fuel: The Giantess' kitchen is full of the finest ingredients, but nearly all of them are rotten, there's mold growing under her floor, mounds of expired flour and Zombie Gingerbreadmen, Flies and rotten sentient eggs roam everywhere.
  • The Scrappy: Perhaps unsurprisingly for a character with so many similarities to pop culture's most Annoying Video Game Helper, Lighty isn't exactly beloved by fans of the game. After a while her screeching insults at and berating Teddy in a painfully high-pitched voice, most of which feel needlessly vicious and uncalled for, just became a bit too much for many players. And given the reveal that she was the true antagonist of the story all along, this was probably the intention.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Despite the entire game taking place inside her mind, we learn virtually nothing about Alicia, as she only makes an appearance in a photo in her room and the final cut-scene. The only information we get concerning her is that she might not be as sweet as Teddy remembers her to be and that she at one point put Teddy away after being teased for still having him.
