YMMV / Superboy (1994)

  • No Yay: Pointed out by S.B. himself when Amanda Spence – who not only intends to kill him but has already subjected him to a potentially fatal experimental process – comes into the room while he's naked and looks him over. (Not to mention that he was cloned from her father.)
That's it! Not only did you kidnap me and lock me up, you come in here and start checkin' me out! Lady or not, I'm gonna deck you!
  • Only the Creator Does It Right: Attempted. After sales dropped substantially during the run of Ron Marz and Ramon Bernado, the character's original creators (Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett) returned to the title in an attempt to recapture the magic the book once had. However, the new stories featured a radically different direction and despite the original team, never truly recovered.
  • The Scrappy: Tana Moon has largely become reviled by modern readers due to the unsettling implications of her relationship with Superboy as an adult woman and a child.
  • Squick: Superboy's romantic entanglements with Knockout are played up as her being exploitative but for some reason his relationship with Tana Moon is not. He looks about 15 or 16 and she, an adult woman, started flirting with him when he was only hours old.
  • Values Dissonance: Superboy's two most prominent relationships for most of this series involved grown women Tana Moon and Knockout. The age gap between Kon and Tana was emphasized at one point by the fact he was beginning to attend high school while she was a 24 year old woman with a career as a reporter. Knockout's infatuation with Kon was more blatantly disturbing by how she tried to mold him into being a killer. However, at no one point was it ever acknowledged that these were adult women who specifically sought out a teenage boy and tried to use him for their own goals while initiating romantic relationships with him. If a plot like this was used in modern day comics, Kon would be recognized as a victim of grooming.
