• Harsher in Hindsight: After decades of Sarek's disapproval of Spock joining Starfleet seeming to be nothing but Vulcan pride, Star Trek: Discovery added a ton of nuance to it: the Vulcan Expeditionary Fleet would allow one of Sarek's "not-quite Vulcans" into its ranks but not two, and after a good deal of anguishing he selected his son over his human ward Michael Burnham, which left her emotionally crushed and doubting herself for years after. And then Spock's joining Starfleet instead made that all pointless.
• Ho Yay: Amanda and Sarek touch the tips of their index and middle fingers together several times. As they do this in public, three times in front of Kirk and others, this gesture is more likely to be Vulcan hand-holding, but slash fans like to assume this is how Vulcans kiss, which may change the way you view certain scenes.
