YMMV / Speak Now

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Many have speculated that the narrator of "Ours" is singing to another woman since a lot of the lyrics indicate that people don't approve of the relationship and talk about it behind their backs, but it's never really clear why (beyond the narrator's father making snide remarks about the love interest's tattoos — which also fits with this narrative because many consider tattoos to be "unladylike"). The song arguably becomes even sweeter if you think it's about a lesbian relationship; the narrator is saying that no matter the ignorance they may face, she can take it, because they're together.
    The stakes are high
    The water's rough
    But this love is ours
  • Even Better Sequel: To quote one reviewer:
Swift's third album, Speak Now, is roughly twice as good as 2008's Fearless, which was roughly twice as good as her 2006 debut.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Seeing Taylor singing about forgiveness to Kanye West in "Innocent" became painful considering the whole #KimExposedTaylor incident in 2016 that hurt Taylor so badly and inspired her album reputation.
    • While the romance that she sings about on this song is already sad with "Dear John", Midnights revealed with "Would've, Could've, Should've" that she finally comes to term with the power and age imbalance in the relationship and how it deeply affected her.
    • "Timeless" - a song about wishing to find a love that is "timeless" - is harsh in two ways:
      • When she first wrote the song, she really had hoped that the relationship she sang about would last forever. This album and the next album are filled with songs about heartbreaks and toxic relationships.
      • The album was rerecorded in 2022, when she was still together with her longest lasting (at that point) boyfriend Joe Alwyn - whom she had repeatedly written songs about wanting to marry and start a family with. By the time the album was released, they had broken up.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: "Back to December" was based around how Taylor hoped she could reconcile with Taylor Lautner after their break-up. While the song leaves the outcome ambiguous, in real life they eventually ended up back on good terms with each other, to the point that Lautner ended up playing a role in the music video for her later song "I Can See You".
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: While this album is usually overshadowed by the monstrous success of Fearless and Red, it is absolutely beloved in South Korea. Many Koreans idols have stated this is their favorite Swift album and that they are frequently requested by their fans to cover its songs. This is mostly attributed to the Speak Now tour being the first (and so far only) time she visited the country.
