YMMV / South Park S 17 E 7 Black Friday

Go To

  • Unintentional Period Piece: As is typical of South Park, this episode, along with its successors, aggressively date themselves to November 2013.
    • They focus on the then-current release of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
    • The main reason given for the intensity of the conflict between fans of the two consoles is that having the less popular console meant having fewer people to play online with. While this remained an issue for much of the The Eighth Generation of Console Video Games, by the end of the generation, most major multiplayer titles such as Fortnite and Call of Duty would support cross-platform play, allowing players with different consoles to play with one another.
    • The show depicts Steve Ballmer as CEO of Microsoft, a job that he would leave in 2014, ironically in part due to the poor performance of the Xbox One.
    • The episodes parody Game of Thrones a series that had premiered the previous year and was at the height of its popularity. Game of Thrones would end in 2019 and see its popularity massively decline thanks to Ending Aversion.
    • The in-store Black Friday madness that the climax parodies has declined in the decade since the episodes aired, having been supplanted by online shopping instead.
