YMMV / Sonic the Hedgehog Adventure Gamebooks

Go To

  • Broken Base: Marc Gascoigne and Jonathan Green's books. Are they improvements over the previous books that resembles James Wallis' books? Or are they just as bad - if not worse - than the other books?
  • Fridge Horror: At one point in Metal City Mayhem, Sonic can find Sally Acorn trapped in a glass box with limited air. If Sonic wastes time destroying the robot guarding her instead of smashing the box open, Sally ends up dying! Where the worst part comes in is that you can complete this game without even encountering Sally, meaning she would have died and Sonic wouldn't have even known.'
  • First Installment Wins: The James Wallis books Metal City Mayhem and Zone Rangers are held as the best books in the series, mainly for their darker edge and investing story.
  • Seasonal Rot: Surprising for a series of six books, but fans tend to agree that after James Wallis left, the books Sonic v. Zonik and The Zone Zapper are of far lower quality, mostly due to James' sharp dark edge and fourth wall breaking found in early books being gone, tense problems and questionable grammar, typos that ruin gameplay, many of the choices being simple "do you go left or right?" or "do you run blindly in or think of a plan first?" varieties, and being way too easy compared to the other books.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: Despite being from the Sonic series, the books - or more the James Wallis books - have darker and grim consequences than the video games (ex: Sally dying in a glass box, Sonic dying in all sorts of ways, etc.).
