- Tough Act to Follow: Sign o' the Times was Prince's biggest critical and commercial success since Purple Rain and is often ranked by audiences and analysts as one of the best albums of the 1980s, if not all time. Consequently, it would cast a large shadow over all of Prince's subsequent releases, not helped by the junking of the Black Album and his souring relationship with Warner (Bros.) Records. Among many fans, Sign o' the Times is widely regarded as Prince's last truly great album, and his following material would mark a gradual decline in fortune that would only be reversed with Musicology in 2004 and especially his death in 2016.
