- Broken Base: The revelation that Kodya and old Gyrus had a relationship in the Room of Swords has split the reader base. Some fans welcome the pairing and are fervent defenders of it while others hate the idea of a potential gay pairing in the story. There are also others on neither side and care more about the backstory and mythology behind the room rather than any of the romantic pairings.
- Ragan is also a contentious character. Some fans find her unnecessarily cruel to Gyrus, Sylvia, and Tori when they aren't much of a threat to the inhabitants of the room. Others find her actions justified considering old Gyrus wiped out half of the inhabitants of the room and allowed the Shadow Army to take the majority of the swords they acquired. For these fans she comes off as Properly Paranoid of Gyrus and his potential.
