YMMV / Petz: Catz - Dogz 2

Go To

  • Annoying Video Game Helper: Beat will frequently pop out to give exposition in the form of long, unskippable monologues. It can get quite tedious at times.
  • Awesome Music: The game has a seriously cool soundtrack. Some plays admit to loading up a level just to hear the background music on loop!
    • The theme for Pawville. A warm, nostalgic tune to accompany such a cute little village.
    • Lappy Lake has a stirring orchestral score that highlights the game's sense of adventure.
    • The Inferno Cave theme is sure to get your head bobbing to the beat. The strong percussion and bold brass flourishes are a perfect representation of the level's heat mechanics.
    • Lonesome Park's score features heavy piano chords and timpani drumming to highlight the danger in the level. It's also full of violin glissandos that seem to represent the dreaded whirlwinds.
    • Gongoro Peak features a cool, adventurous theme reminiscient of a cowboy film.
    • Ivlet's theme, serving as the final boss music, pulls no punches. It's bold and encapsulates the sense of chaos that this wolf takes with him everywhere.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • That a game called "Petz Catz/Dogz 2" has a FINAL BOSS with an epic boss battle theme.
Youtube commenter Giratina: The amount of confusion this video causes never fails to amuse me.
    • The anticlimactic nature of the final boss battle. Ivlet has the all-powerful Magic Hat and a chaos dragon to conquer the world...and he's defeated by you throwing rocks and meowing/barking at him.
    • How the narrative sort of forgets about Victor once he's not relevant to the plot anymore. The last we see of him, he's still in jail.
  • Moe: All the dog/cat characters are adorable. The player's own puppy or kitten is especially cute.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The cutscene where Ivlet attacks the island is rather intense for a game aimed at little kids. At one point, he hurls a fireball at the player's kitten/puppy and their friend!
    • Periodically, cutscenes will play showing Ivlet's descent into darkness. He hulks out into a bigger, saber-toothed version of himself and the Magic Hat grows darker and darker with his evil.
    • The bat enemies in the Bubble Cave are creepy as is, but they're also known to have their audio glitch out. This results in them making terrifying static sounds instead of their usual squeaks.
    • The whirlwinds in Lonesome Park can be scary at times. They're very loud, and if the player gets caught in one, their kitten/puppy gets sucked up into the twister in an oddly dark cutscene.
  • Sidetracked by the Gold Saucer: A skilled player dedicated to finishing the main storyline can do so in just a few hours... but there's a surprisingly large variety of sidequests and collectibles that can easily double that time and then some.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • After Ivlet attacks the island, the next cutscene is the player's puppy or kitten locked in the jail. It hurts to see them locked up and crying. Remember, the player character is supposed to be a child. Then Victor (also a child, mind you) offers to take their place in the cell, where he stays for the rest of the game.
    • The last cutscene begins with the player's parents outside their house, crying because they can't find their child. Luckily, this is quickly resolved when the player makes a triumphant return and jumps into Mom's embrace.
