YMMV / One Piece: Egghead Arc

Go To

  • Abandon Shipping: Every ship involving Bonney was burned to the ground with Chapter 1098's revelation that she's actually twelve years old, and the subsequent chapter confirming she used her Devil Fruit powers to make herself appear older.
  • Arc Fatigue:
    • While nowhere near as exhausting as Wano or Dressrosa in terms of length, a good deal of time is spent away from the Straw Hats and with the Revolutionary Army and the Marines. It's somewhat alleviated since we get to check in with popular characters like Vivi and Koby and get to learn Kuma's backstory but Oda taking more frequent breaks during this arc and the fact that the eternally hyped Elbaf is teased as the next destination for the crew isn't helping matters. However, people were supportive of Oda taking a three-week break for self-care in light of Akira Toriyama's sudden passing.
    • Amongst all the different viewpoints going on, the Kuma flashback goes on for 8 chapters, which can feel a bit fatiguing for those who are waiting to see Egghead again.
  • Awesome Art: Chapter 1098 didn't have its art finished in time for release, resulting in a far more unrefined style than what most are used to; however, several Western fans applauded the art in the chapter regardless, saying that the rough, sketchy art style adds to the incredibly dark mood of the chapter.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • Kuma punching Saturn straight in the face is immensely satisfying, even moreso because Saturn proved to be able to back up his authority with combat power and had already pressed the kill switch for Kuma. Nothing - not even death - can stop Kuma's love for his daughter.
    • Seeing the Five Elders gradually realize Vegapunk has them completely checkmated with his Dead Man's Switch contingency plan and there's nothing they can do about it is incredibly satisfying given how high and mighty they've been.
  • Fetish Retardant: Any kind of lewd depiction of Bonney, in and out of the series, becomes harder to look at when you realize she's a 12-year-old that's aging herself up into an adult with her Devil Fruit powers.
  • Fridge Horror: Look at Abandon Shipping and Fetish Retardant. And then remember that Bonney was entrapped by Blackbeard in the immediate aftermath of the Paramount War. Two years previous.
  • Memetic Loser:
    • Dragon's refusal to help Kuma find Ginny in the past has led to him being criticized unfavorably vs Luffy, who declared war on the World Government in order to get Robin back at Enies Lobby.
    • Because Zoro seems to have difficulty defeating Lucci, he has gained this reputation, due to having problems with a villain that Luffy defeated with relative ease. Amusingly invoked in-universe when Sanji criticises him for taking so long to defeat Lucci, prompting Zoro to end the fight with his next attack.
  • Moral Event Horizon: If Saint Jaygarcia Saturn hadn't crossed this already when he forced Kuma into a position where he'd become a Full-Conversion Cyborg using Bonney's life as a bargaining chip, along with forcing Vegapunk to be the one to pull the trigger, then he did this when it's revealed that the reason Ginny contracted the lethal Sapphire Scales that she passed onto Bonney was because of him callously experimenting on her. Vegapunk was aghast that the Elder had knowingly trapped Kuma into throwing away his life in a situation he was responsible for.
