• Paranoia Fuel:
  • Bo Cleevil is watching. The revelation that this propaganda piece was true, and that whenever you think you're alone, you're not. Whenever you think that somebody is watching you, he is. Enjoying every minute of your ignorance. Sweet dreams!
  • There is also the knowledge that your dreams may not be safe and the Bogey will kill you through them ala Freddy Krueger.
• Tearjerker: In the third book, when May and Pumpkin come across Arista, the kindly beekeeper and Pumpkin's master, now one of the many ghosts enslaved by Bo Cleevil.
  • Also from the third book is Pumpkin sacrificing himself for May, tackling Bo Cleevil without hesitation.
• Toy Ship: Lots of people end up shipping Lucius and May Bird, particularly by the third book when they're the same age and there actually is some romantic interaction between the two.
• The Woobie: Lucius. He's taken away from his family forever and dragged into the afterlife by a terrifying monster at the age of thirteen, and then when he makes friends with May Bird he ventures out of his tiny cave home for the first time only to be soon after sent over to South Place to be enslaved by ghouls. His treatment is the most unfair out of any of the companions in the first arc.
