- Critical Dissonance: Rotten Tomatoes puts the critic score at 33% while the audience is 66%.
- Narm: At one point teenage Jo says to her boyfriend "you're such a weaselly guy". Subtle foreshadowing.
- Suspiciously Similar Song: Every now and then, we're treated to Background Music which is apparently meant to sound vaguely like John Williams' Harry Potter themes.
- Tear Jerker:
- It's totally sad to watch little Jo getting picked on for not being as far in maths as all of the other kids.
- The moment where Jo's mother first shows symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.
- After her mother's funeral, she discovers that she kept a story Jo wrote when she was six.
- When JKR looks in the mirror at the end, thinks of the Mirror of Erised and its power to show the "deepest, most desperate desire of your heart" - and sees her mom.
- Took the Bad Film Seriously: It's noted that Poppy Montgomery really brings a lot to the role and captures JK Rowling's mannerisms, despite the fact that this is a Lifetime Movie of the Week.
