YMMV / La Celestina

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Melibea is arguably playing with Calisto in the first scene, but for the rest of the work she's completely naive and innocent. That said, remember Fernando de Rojas didn't write the first act. Someone else did.
  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: The aesop of this story is not to have sex before marriage. However, no one could tell just by reading the story, since everyone says how wonderful it is.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Celestina. She was originally a supporting character, but now the book is simply known as Celestina.
  • Memetic Mutation: The novel and Celestina became so popular that Celestina not only became the Trope Codifier in the Middle Ages and the Trope Namer in Spanish, but also her name literally became a dictionary word in the Spanish language as a synonymous of "matchmaker".
  • Values Dissonance: While Calixto is presumably meant to be at least somewhat sympathetic (and his love for Melibea is generally portrayed as genuine) his response to her rejection of him is to hire a witch to cast a magic spell on her which will make her love him (and want to have sex with him). To modern readers, this is essentially rape, which (along with Calixto's general foolishness and mistreatment of his servants) makes him Unintentionally Unsympathetic to many readers.
