  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Does the boy choose to leave to rejoin the friends who had to emigrate? His line "you's all fucked off" suggests it. Or perhaps he was initially positive about the move, but then realised just what he'd be missing - and the entire monologue is him trying to justify leaving.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Despite the cynical nature of the film, there are idealistic glimmers. The boy says he'll probably never see the Summer Solstice at Newgrangenote  but as long as they can light the Christmas lights in Dublin every year, he's happy.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The film ends with the boy emigrating abroad. Emmet Kirwan has remained almost exclusively in Ireland since the video came out.
  • Tear Jerker: The entire film is a bittersweet one, really hitting home for the generation that were forced to emigrate in search of better futures.
"There's ten good reasons to go, and a million tiny reasons not to. And I don't know which is which anymore..."
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: Dave Tynan had to do a lot of clarifying that the film did not have underlying political subtext, and he actually tried to avoid making overt statements. Didn't stop viewers from trying to find them anyway.
