YMMV / John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch

Go To

  • Award Snub: Despite universal praise, it lost both of the Emmys it was up for to the far more polarizing Dave Chappelle: Sticks and Stones.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The Googy segment. It's initially somewhat somber after the Googy skit, with the reveal that Googy's actor died. Then John and the kids start arguing about who contributed more to his declining health. Then it's revealed that the actor for a fellow costumed character went missing, with a similar In Memoriam picture being shown. Then John reveals that he has In Memoriam photos for every member of the cast, including himself.
  • Fridge Brilliance: When you think about it, algebra actually did save the Tutor's eye (at first): by pretending to be a math tutor, he was able to stall the husband long enough so that right when he was about to gouge the Tutor's eye out, he got the call about Princess Diana's death, allowing the Tutor to escape in the ensuing commotion.
  • Heartwarming Moments: The special ends on a very simple message from André De Shields, who delivers it with the conviction of every single fiber of his being, his voice even cracking with emotion at the end.
"There is no one like you.
There has never been anyone like you.
There will never be anyone like you.
    Therefore, be yourself."
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: While the PG rating means that kids can still watch this, many of the jokes are ones kids aren't likely to get, and it gets rather dark and existential at times. Overall, it's skewed towards an older demographic of kids than the specials it parodies.
