- Harsher in Hindsight: Compare Challenge 142 to the shuttle Challenger, another spacecraft crewed by five men and two women that suffers a horrible fate.
- Special Effects Failure:
- An early scene of the creature's shadow shows it with a human head. The spacewalk also showcased the astronauts climbing out the supposedly-vertical rocket airlock with a ladder on the floor, followed by a Conspicuously Light Patch of them being superimposed on a matte of the ship in a far-away shot.
- An aversion (or maybe a failed aversion or Narm Charm): When the mask for the creature was cast, Corrigan wasn't available and the person they did use for the head mold was in fact a bit smaller than Corrigan. The creature's thick tongue is in fact Corrigan's chin jutting out of the mask and painted to look like a tongue!
- Who knew that the M1 was so flexible?
- Values Dissonance: Women (who are the ship's medical officer and her assistant) doing the dishes during their more important jobs, Carruthers sentenced in absentia to death by firing squad, and a lot of cigarettes and weaponry in the ship's supply stores.
