YMMV / Imaginary Mary

Go To

  • Jerkass Woobie: The titular Mary falls somewhere in this. Upon when Alice had grown up and stopped being there for her for the past few years, you can't blame her that much.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Similar to Drop Dead Fred, a story about an imaginary friends helping out their adult creator is a great start for a story, but it gets bogged down by said imaginary friend being both hugely annoying and a total liability.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Much like Out of Jimmy's Head, while an audience for a Roger Rabbit Effect sitcom does exist, but the otherwise mediocre story and characters couldn't hold an audience or justify it's hefty production costs.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: The show is about an imaginary friend reuniting with her creator after not having seen each other in a long time, but just because the show stars an imaginary friend doesn't make it for kids. The titular character drinks alcohol, there is tons of swearing, and one episode had a subplot about sex. In short, it's a Spiritual Successor to Drop Dead Fred. Not helping matters is that Imaginary Mary came out shortly after Inside Out, a children's movie (distributed by Disney, which is the parent company of the series' home network ABC) with its own cute imaginary friend character, did.
