• Heartwarming Moments:
  • In the opening when Gon and Killua arrive at the Battle Olympia Gon helps a little girl get her Balloon back.
  • Despite being villains the core members of the shadow show signs of friendship towards each other, with Rengoku smiling at a child who bumped into her showing that she isn’t completely bad.
  • Gon being determined to save Netero and get back at the Shadow member who hurt Zushi.
  • After fighting Gaki Gon and Killua have friendly banter with him, even saying that he should have participated in the tournament. And Gaki in return shows respect towards them and saying that despite beating Zushi earlier he says that he has potential to be stronger. If events had turned out differently then maybe they could have been friends at some point.
  • Killua managing to shut down Rengoku’s On by appealing to her humanity telling her how good Gaki was, convicting her to let go of her hate.
• Jerkass Woobie: Despite being terrorists all of Jed’s followers qualify. They were once young children whose only crime were being descendants of the Shadows On users. One day a man named Garcia hired Hunters to have them imprisoned for allegedly plotting a rebellion against the government forcing them to be sent to a concentration camp. The three who escaped who were only children that roamed the earth as they sought revenge against Garcia and the Hunter Association.
• Moral Event Horizon: Despite their sympathetic backstory the Shadow specifically the leader Jed crosses this when they hold everyone in Heaven's Arena hostage threatening to kill both the Chairman and all the hostages if their demands aren’t met, killing anyone who intervenes.
  • Garcia crossed this years ago when it’s revealed that he gave the order to wipe out the shadows descendants by having them be sent to a hellhole prison to be worked to death.
• Tear Jerker:
  • The backstory of the three shadow members is truly tragic. They were once normal children until they were persecuted due to their ancestry leading them to witness the Hunter Association having their friends and family either getting executed or sent to a concentration camp leaving them to wonder the world alone.
  • Gaki’s death is also a gut punch towards to both his friends and to Gon and Killua who were just having friendly banter with him and making him realize that not all Hunters were bad. Only to explode as a consequence of his On condition.
  • Killua managing to get Rengoku to let go of her hate reminding her of Gaki and that he doesn’t want Gon to suffer from On.
  • Despite being the big bad Jed’s death can come across as tragic as Netero mourns his former friends second death and hoping Jed and his followers can find peace in the afterlife.
