Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission is a 2013 film based on the Hunter × Hunter manga series, it is the second film of the series and, surprisingly, the second one that came out within the same year. It apparently takes place between Greed Island and the Chimera Ant (some time before the latter arc begins as it's mentioned that Gon and Killua were traveling with Kite and took a break from that).

Years ago before the main timeline, Netero did battle against a man named Jed who could use a mysterious ability known as "On". While he managed to defeat him, Jed vowed his grudge against Netero would never end.

In the present time, the Battle Olympia of Heaven's Arena has commenced and Gon and Killua have come back to cheer on Zushi who's participating, meeting up with their former Nen teachers, Wing and Biscuit Kruger. Kurapika is also there, still acting as Neon Nostrade's bodyguard who has shown up to watch the events. Leorio was invited to come too... but suddenly ends up attacked by cloaked figures while in transit to the arena.

Just as the competition is about to begin, said group suddenly invade, take over the building and capture Netero, who's there to oversee the events. Gon, Killua and Kurapika avoid their detection and go head upward to free the arena, all the while, trying to find exactly who these people are.

Tropes

  • Advertised Extra: Hisoka is given a large billing in the posters but he never does anything of note aside from bringing Leorio to Kurapika, watching them fight Shura, and giving exposition to the main four.
  • Badass in Distress: Netero ends up captured by Rengoku's Go ability which pins him to a wall and restricts his movement. It can't be touched lest it attacks whoever tries, thus Netero ends up subdued for most of the movie.
  • The Corruption: Gon lets himself be corrupted by "On" to try to fight Jed on equal grounds. It didn't work and spent the last few minutes writhing in pain trying to fight its influence after Netero quickly sent him energy to purify himself.
  • "Die Hard" on an X: The film is essentially the villains taking over a building and our heroes trying to free it. Heck, the villain's plot involves holding the place hostage in exchange for something (the Black Report in this case) and one of the fights takes place in an elevator shaft.
  • Free-Fall Fight: Done several times during Gon and Killua's fight against Gaki in the elevator shaft.
  • Freudian Excuse: Shadow was a black ops organization of the Hunter Association, but were killed when they used On, a forbidden technique. The chairman at the time ordered all of Shadow's families to be relocated only to be killed by Garcia who hired Hunters to purge the descendants. Gaki, Shura, and Rengoku were among such group but survived the purge by hiding in the woods and were forced to go on the run when their village was destroyed.
  • Last Breath Bullet: Shura tries to hit Leorio with his remaining needle filled with Jed's blood after being fatally stabbed by Kurapika. Kurapika takes the hit instead.
  • Mirror Boss: Shura's "On" power, Shapeshifter, allows him to make a clone of his attacker along with all their abilities. He does this against Kurapika.
  • No Body Left Behind: After Gon defeats Jed, his body crumbles to dust as he says his final words to Netero.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Shura cites this of Kurapika, with both wanting to avenge their fallen clan members after they were exterminated (Shura's by the Hunter Associate, Kurapika's by The Phantom Troupe). Kurapika disagrees, stating while he does want revenge on his clan's killers, he doesn't want to get innocents involved nor lose himself completely in hatred in pursuit of it.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome:
    • During the climax in the arena level, we see Zushi and Biscuit taking care of some Shadow mook. Wing does too, though offscreen as when were shown him his opponents are already defeated.
    • Gon and Killua defeating many henchmen while climbing 150 floors all the way to the 200th floor occur off-screen, and Jed's past is given focus instead.
  • Race Against the Clock: After Kurapika is infected with the blood containing On, Gon and Killua have to defeat Jed in order to dispel it or Kurapika will die.
  • Redemption Equals Death: After Gon and Killua defeat him, Gaki makes small talk with the boys and they all manage to get along well together. Unfortunately, this means he has broken the contract with his On (since he had vowed to never let a hunter defeat him) and the power causes him to blow up. His last act is telling the boys to run before they're caught in the blast radius.
  • Sudden Eye Color: Kurapika’s eyes are dark blue in this movie as opposed to his usual brown.
  • Takes One to Kill One: After Gon gets infected with On, he attempts to fight Jed with it, but naturally Jed's own stronger On abilities counter his. So Gon combines both properties of On and his Nen to surpass Jed's.
  • Taking the Bullet:
    • As he dies, Shura spits out one more needle containing Jed's blood and throws it a Leorio. Kurapika jump in the way, taking the hit and being infected with On.
    • After Killua makes a wound on Jed and some blood falls toward him, Gon pushes him out of the way and is infected by the blood instead.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: Killua does this Rengoku in the climax, convincing her to let go of her grudge for the sake of Gaki so that she'll disengage her On ability and free Netero. She does literally die afterward but had already came into the plan expecting to, though really didn't have the heart to hold her grudge.
  • The Brute: Gaki of the Shadow bunch. He relies on pure strength and is one of the tougher members of their group.
  • The Cameo: Pariston makes a cameo while Beans is handling the hostage negotiation with Jed, Beans complaining about him not even trying to help with the situation.
  • The Power of Hate: How "On" works, it draws on the hatred of its user to use its power, even allowing the user to use every category of the Nen ability. Naturally, this is what allows Jed to return from the dead when it seems Netero had killed him. However, the downside is that it's a contact type and will result in death when not abided.
  • The Virus: "On" can be transmitted through blood, locking a Nen user's ability and forcing the infectee to use On. Naturally, since this is a contract type, even unwillingly, those that refuse will end up dying. Kurapika is injected with the blood after defeating Shura and is trying to fight its corruption and Gon becomes infected after pushing Killua out of the way before making a contract to fight Jed on even ground.
