YMMV / Hop-o'-My-Thumb

Go To

  • Magnificent Bastard: Hop-o'-My-Thumb was the youngest of seven boys, but he compensated for this with his brain. Learning that his parents were intending on abandoning him and his brothers in the forests, Hop-o'-My-Thumb gathers small pebbles to create a pathway home. When they were captured by a voracious ogre, Hop-o'-My-Thumb switches gold crowns with bonnets, tricking the ogre into killing his own daughters. When the ogre chased after them for vengeance, Hop-o'-My-Thumb takes the opportunity to steal his seven-league-boots and returns to the house to manipulate the ogre's wife into giving him all of the ogre's possessions under the claim that her husband was being held captive. Hop-o'-My-Thumb later joins an unnamed court, getting appointed with militaristic tasks, before returning home.
  • Values Dissonance: Probebly the best way to explain Hop-o'-My-Thumb condemning seven sleeping children to death. Back in the days the book was written, many monster, such as giants and ogres, were thought of as Always Chaotic Evil. As such, simply establishing that the giants seven daughters were monsters would be enough to justify killing them. These days, people are more open to the idea of friendly monsters, and so would be horrified that the so called "hero" just murdered seven young children.
